TP 770 BIOS after CPU upgrade, help!

Greetings ThinkPad experts,


I changed out the PI 200MMX CPU card in my 9548-40U TP770, and replaced it with a PII 266. I get the expected error code 192 and get by it
with the F1 and Esc key sequence. My question is now how do i get into
the BIOS setup config? Holding down the F1 key while turning on does
not get into easy-config anymore, just goes to the error screen. Can i
get to the BIOS set-up while it detects an error 192??? Also, Is there
a way to hack the BIOS to not get the 192 error upon startup?

Read the 770 upgrade thread at the top of the page again. The answers ( links to the answers) to your questions are in there.

look for a link to the wmbois forum, where it talks about editing the bios to disable the cach on boot.

The 192 is a fan error it has nothing to do with the L2 cache.

Most cases the 192 error is caused by the fuse for the fan electronics being blown. Open up the thinkpad again and look for little blue fuses and check them with a multimeter for conductance.

Why would the fuse blow? Well the 770 and 600 series have .2 A fuses because the fan draws something like .15 A. So something keeping it from turning while the power is on will blow it.

I am not familiar with 770 board design I have a 600E so I can't tell you exactly which fuse to check but on the 600E it is F14

Since these fuses seem to be all surface mount (and NOT something I'm going to try and replace/repair with my soldering iron!), it would seem that the only path is to replace the DC - DC board.

Has ANYONE successfully cured the pernicious, persistent 'Error 192' (Fan) problem by replacing this DC - DC board?

Not that I'm aware of. I don't have a plain vanilla 770 machine, but from what I've seen, the Error 192 comes up when you try to upgrade the CPU from a PI to a PII on certain 770 machines. According to JHEM, "the 770 and some early 600 machines are built on the Intel 430TX chipset and are not PII machines, but rather PentiumMMX machines....To reliably upgrade to a PII CPU you need a later model 770 or 600 series machine that is built on the Intel 440BX chipset." (see What's the secret? PII 400 in a 770). I assume that the 192 error comes from an incompatibility between the 430TX chipset, the motherboard, and the PII chip.

You've probably already seen these, but for what it's worth, here are three threads that seem to cover the same 192 error as the original poster in this thread, and none of these threads has a solution:

If someone knew, and saw your posts, they would surely help you out. It's not like anyone is keeping secrets here!!

Tom, in another thread, you mention you are working on a 770Z, but this thread is about a plain vanilla 770 with a PII. If you are getting this 192 error in a 770Z, then the problem should be fixable. I have a 770Z with a PIII 500MHz and I don't get any errors on bootup.

The box I've got is a 770Z - 9549-8BU, and it seemed to me that it ought to be fixable.

It just didn't seem reasonable for people to keep doing the upgrades to 500+ MHz processors (in the 770Z) if the '192' error predictably occurred.

The '192' loop at the front of the boot sequence prevents ever booting from the CD, and therefore ever loading the OS or a new HDD in the unit.

Just not a functional upgrage if the problem couldn't be resolved.

I guess I get to be the first to try the DC-DC board replacement to see if the '192' goes away!
