Replace Hard Drive with Flash Drive

#1 Post by jwcrim » Mon Dec 19, 2005 5:22 pm

I have some old Thinkpads I would like to replace the 3 to 6 GB drives with Compact Flash based drives that would emulate the original drives (and not rquire a special BIOS).

Is this possible?

You would only be doing this if you had an application aspect for your 600. IDE flash drives are very expensive, and are designed to be put into harsh environments, such as controlling machinery or other industrial applications. Due to their price, IDE flash drives are generall small, usually under 128Mb, and contain enough kernel just to get the device going, ie., QNX os.

You can find 2 GB Flash USB drives for as low as $100.

Here is a 2 GB CompactFlash card for $100:

IDE Drive CF card adapters are available for $10 to $20.

But Flash memory prices are about to really drop now that Toshiba and Samsung are setting up multi-billion dollar facilities to serve the multi-GIG MP3 player market.
