X4* Wobble Problem

#1 Post by travelpad » Mon Dec 19, 2005 8:50 pm

Hi,

Just bought a new X40 today (2371G4U) to replace an ageing X20.
Generally very impressed but this X40 only sits on 3-corners, with the front right corner pad about 3/16th of an inch off the level, effectively wobbling every time I put my wrists down to type. I checked on multiple surfaces so it's the thinkpad and not the surface that isn't flat.

Is this normal for the X4 series?

Love the size of X40, but is the X32 better built?

Thanks,

Do the rubber pads appear to be worn down, or mal-aligned?

If they are, then you can order replacement pads from IBM, I believe.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. No - the X40 is brand new right from IBM. No wear and tear. Without proper measurements, I'm guessing that the inside frame isn't perfectly flat.

I had a powerbook with the exact same problem new.

Basically, put the laptop on a hard table with the edge that is higher slightly over it. Hold the laptop down on the table and apply pressure to the edge that is sticking out. If anything inside is slightly misaligned this will help. If you don't overdo it, it should work... or at least make it much more bearable.

My X40 was like that new (15 months ago) but seems to have gotten better. Don't think mine was quite a noticeable as you describe, however.

Hmmm...that was a problem with some Asus laptops that I've dealt with.

Before I bought my X40 (and my ex - T41p), I checked the corners, and they were both flat. I guess it's only a small quality control problem.
