You can start here:
http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/vm/browserapp.html

1. Download & install VMware Player
2. Download the Ubuntu browser-appliance VM.

Both are free.
VMware Player has a simplified UI.

If you want more flexibility, you want VMware Workstation.
You can sign up for a 30-days trial.

I use Workstation on my T40p to run various guests (both Windows & Linux including OSX). My host is WinXP Pro SP2.
It should run just fine on a T43.

or if you don't see the need for the full VMware, learn how to edit VMX-files. and to not forget get you a qemu-img.exe.
now mine: T42 2373-VMH - 1.5 GB RAM, 60 GB HDD, BT, WLAN, SXGA, 9cell

To actually build a machine, you need the real VMware product (not free). To use an existing machine, you can use VMware Player (free).

In terms of complexity, VMware is easy to use. The complexity is in building the virtual machine, networking it, and connecting it to the host machine. I would download the documentation and read it. This will give you an idea of how it works and what to expect.
