Is this T41p a good deal?

#1 Post by wolfman » Tue Dec 20, 2005 9:53 am

Hello all, I can get the following deal - is it worth it? I think it is a very good deal, but wanted opinions...

T41p 2374-GGU
Pentium M 1.7 gigahertz processor
14.1 inch 1400x1050 display
60 gig 7200 rpm drive w/ 8 meg of cache
bluetooth
802.11b wireless
gigabit ethernet
9 cell battery
xp pro
dvd/cdrw combo
128 meg fire gl t2
512 meg of ram
ultranav

7 day money back and 90 day warranty for $916 and free shipping.

What do you think? It's a cerified used unit - never bought one before...worth the risk?

Thanks!

Mmmmm, I wouldn't worry about that too much. If it has been cleared by IBM/Lenovo, then there shouldn't be much of a problem. Can you get a 3 Year Warranty on it? Or any Warranty?

Sadly, only businesses can extend the warranty...no extensions for individuals according to to IBM. :(

Sorry that you cannot get a 3yr extension of a IBM-backed warranty on this deal. That would be a deal breaker for me. Else, it looks fine.

VERY VERY and VERY GOOD deal for that price. In Singapore, according to Lenovo at www.lenovo.com/sg the list price is around SGD 7,000 (divided by 1.7 = USD 4000) which is too much expensive....

Looks like a price drop on this unit - now I can get it for $767.20...but still only with the 90 day warranty. Same exact specs as the original post...I'm starting to get really tempted now...:)

Any opinions on the new price for the config with 90 day warranty only direct from IBM (there is a 7 day no question asked money back guarantee)?

What type of stress test should I put it under in the first week to ensure it's OK? (I'll run memtest 86 overnight after making sure there is ram in each slot)...Any suggestions?

Thanks again!

It's indeed a good deal but my concern is the warranty....just if you can, purchase for 3 years or at least one year....

FYI-

It's worth it. My bro-in-law just picked one up after I suggested to do so. It's available directly from IBM as a Certified Used unit.

It is a fantastic deal! Perhaps a mistake!

They are tested, cleaned up (new keyboard, etc., as needed) and warrantied. My T40 is from the same place (it arrived in mint condition).

I saw today that model was for sale at $863.10, so I picked one up too. I asked about warranty info and such and you can attach maintenance support to it for 199/year, according to the rep. She gave me the # to call and I asked, and she confirmed I can attach this kind of support to my newly purchased T41p. 2 years is kind of pricey for almost 400 bucks. When I get the email from her I will post what I know.

Out of stock

#20 Post by baovu » Wed Jan 25, 2006 4:03 pm

It seems like IBM/Lenovo has ran out of these T41p. The unit's status is "out of stock" since this morning. I am wondering if IBM/Lenovo will restock this particular model soon or not. It is the best deal under the Certified Used Equipment section so far.

Back on sale

#21 Post by alternative minimum » Thu Jan 26, 2006 4:12 pm

Those t41p's are back on sale on their (ibm's used shop) site. I just got mine today, it is in awesome shape.

As far as warranties on IBM's recertified laptops, here is what my rep sent to me in e-mail, verbatim.

1 Year Parts & Labor P/U Depot (Mail in Repair) $169.00
1 Year IBM Onsite Repair 9x5 Next Business Day Mon-Fri. $199.00
2 Year Parts & Labor P/U Depot (Mail in Repair) $321.00
2 Year IBM Onsite Repair 9x5 Next Business Day Mon-Fri. $388.00

The above options cover all parts and labor with unlimited calls to technical support. The only item it does not cover is the battery and accidental damage.

Onsite repair/exchange-Repair is performed at your location (monitors receive onsite exchange). Response is determined by Service Levels below:

Depot repair-A courier picks up your ThinkPad® and delivers it to our depot repair center, where our objective is to repair it within 12 hours of arrival. Machines arriving at the depot in the morning are scheduled to be repaired and shipped back to you on the same day.

now only if they still offered their x2x or t2x series for around 300 and still offered warranty support direct from IBM.

now i'd be all over that. which is indeed why you really buy IBM. instead of their ODM, the quality that they put into their support and "customer care"

After getting a chance to really tweak it i'm fairly happy. I did spot a stuck pixel, not a huge deal. The battery looks to be a new one, as well.

Lego Star Wars, Farcry, and UT2004 all run great on middle quality settings on AC power, low on battery.

The way I understood the phone rep, you can get that on any certified used lappy they sell, including the T2x series they sell. It's kind of pricey but it is available.

My only thing with this T41p is the 9cell battery. The battery life should be great, but I just dont like the part that sticks out. A 6cell runs from 55 (shipping included) on eBay. I dont know if people have had positive experience with buying battery off eBay or not. Also, this particular model no longer seems to be available from IBM CFU.

My bro-in-law's arrived yesterday. Excellent shape except for two items; 9 cell battery is in yellow zone and keyboard is slightly worn (of course it is a used laptop).

We'll call IBM to see if they will swap out these two items. The person taking the order did say that the keyboard would be new and the battery would be good/new. I'll post a follow up.

Other than that, the T41p is awesome; 1.7GHz pentium m, 60GB 7200 rpm, bluetooth, SVGA+...

IBM support is still the best.

A new 9 cell battery and keyboard is on it's way. No problem at all.

FYI, IBM said the unit is under warranty until 4/2008 with on-site support.

I think this may be changed to the 3 months that is should be as they update their sales records, but, for now, 2+ more years of support is just fine.
