t40p sxga vs. t42 xga

#1 Post by caffemusse » Tue Dec 20, 2005 1:19 pm

Ciao,
Need some advice....

Got the oppertunity to buy a used (with 2yr) warranty t40p 1440 $ and as you know it's got the sxga screen.
I can also afford a brand new t42 2373 with better specs (smaller ati card) but with the xga screen. @ 1700$

What I have difficulty deciding on is the screen I want. xga or sxga?
I know what my needs are (enough with a screensize xga for wordprocessing and the occasional game) but I have diffuculty if the icons ect are too roughly cut in the edges. I have been unable to find any TP's in the stores to compare with (cause theres this wierd monopoly on TP sales here in Denmark) so has anyone got some screenshots off of a 14.1. xga and sxga screen I can take a look at? Preferably from the same webpage ie.?

That being said, should I be thinking 'bout 'aging' technology in the t40p vs. t42? like ram.. (pentium m. 1.6 did it fine for me before, but the Dothan lives in the t42 right?) Perhaps that would spell som less heat development and fannoise then?

Lots-a-q's I know, but I want to make the right buy :)

Is the 2yr warranty on the older unit through IBM or is it one of those third party warranties, like a Mack warranty?

SXGA+ and XGA screenshots from a T40p

#4 Post by smugiri » Tue Dec 20, 2005 6:00 pm

The T40p seems a little over priced ( is this because you are in Denmark? ) ... look at this

I have an 1400*1050 screen shot and a 1024*800 screen shot posted at the links. Remember that since I have the 1400*1050, the 1024*800 resolution is not native so it looks pretty bad. ( It is atually as bad as it seems. )

XGA or SXGA?

#5 Post by solan » Tue Dec 20, 2005 6:10 pm

In my opinion if you want a 12” display an XGA resolution will be fine and also you will save some money on 14” and 15” models but be advice that this is the worst, low cost TFT display and on the 15” an XGA resolution is horrible. I say again this is only in my opinion! I’ve sold my old T42 last week (1,7GHz/1GB RAM/14”TFT XGA/80GB HDD Toshiba GAX 16MB) only because I was not happy whit this 1024x768 TFT.
I own a T42p(2374-HTG) whit UXGA+ S-IPS,FlexView and this display is gorgeous. You can open a lot of windows and see a lot of information but I set de DPI at 120 if I want to see something in explorer! I also own a T43(2669-CTO) whit SXGA panel and this is the right resolution for 14” and 15” displays. It’s bright and clear and the information displayed on it is enough for everything you want to do. Try to buy an SXGA and you wont be disappointed! I am not a native English speaker so I apologies if I make some mistakes.
If you are from a UE country or USA try to look at this:

I feel that the T40p is over priced.

With that much $$$ you can get a T41p with 2-3 year IBM warranty.

Danish prices

I guess the warranty is with a third party (law requires it here in Denmark) but in reality it is IBM that will do the actual servicing. So in a way it's as good as IBMs will be. :?

About the prices, Denmark is notorious for overpricing brands like IBM, so I'm not astonished that some think it is a bit overpriced. Nevertheless, think I will go with the t40p anyway(comes with xppro too), a new one costs 2400$... I also need the danish keyboard so...

Any comments on the technology alert I sounded?

Is the t40p much more noisy (fan ie. ) than the non 'p' models, or does this depend on the tasks...?

Hello caffeemousse,

I have the T40p with SXGA and a T23 with XGA (similar to the T43 screen).

The T40p is dead silent, stays very cool and battery lasts for ages (I had 6.7h when it was new).

Once you worked on SXGA+ you never go back. XGA makes sense only on 14".

Why don`t you buy the T40p on eBay Germany, they go for about plus/minus EUR 1000,- with IBM warranty. Swap the keyboard and you are settled.

For reference, this is the deal we're talking about right?

http://www.laptops.dk/product_info.php? ... cts_id=516

For a ThinkPad in Denmark that's a really good price. Like the others I would like to advocate the SXGA screen. You'll love having more pixels on the screen. :D

For me personally it would come down to deciding if I wanted a used laptop. They don't say anything about the battery so you should probably expect that after 1½ years the battery is ready for replacement. Furthermore, the harddisk drive is bound to be at least a couple of generations old.

The price is still very attractive, though, because the closest competitor in the new section would this T42 SXGA-model priced 67 % higher than the used T40p:

I suppose native support of Wireless-G could be a differentiating point as well depending on how you intend to use it. You can upgrade this and replace both the harddisk drive and battery and stay below the price of the new T42 SXGA, though.

For a better price you need to do what beeblebrox suggests and get one on eBay in either Germany or UK. A Danish keyboard costs about 3-400 DKK when purchaced from IBM online (at least the ones for my T43p is in that range).

"startraveller"

It is exectly the one I'm going for.

And I will, since a used one is fine by me, figure I'll be scratching it up anyways. Already thought about at new hd and a battery as well as wirless /g but none of these are issue now.

What matters is that I get quite a silent, quality machine now.. got exams and stuf.

THx for inputs til now... :D
