Severe Hard-Disk Induced depression.

#1 Post by hubcapboy » Wed Dec 21, 2005 7:15 pm

Just got my first thinkpad, and ordered a replacement hard disk at the same time. I was unaware of the situation with the IDE-SATA-IDE whatever it is situation in the X32.

I've recieved a Hitachi 7k100, which is very pretty sitting on my desk, but has the shovel-type connector, instead of the pin type connector.

I need a few things from you guys. First, I need a few confirmation posts to the tune of "yes, you are screwed." Next, I'd like a few consolation posts, "man, that sucks. you have to make sure that the drive is a "...""

thanks guys.

Nah, I reckon you're not screwed at all. Just get an external case and you've got a nice-sized drive for backups!

Do a search here in the X forum - the issue of HDD sizes and the right connectors was discussed not too long ago.

Cheers :)

ok, I need more input before I buy anOTHER 7200 RPM drive.

all of the newegg hitachis are ATA-6. is this the interface I need. I thought I had bought a "7K100" before, but it was a "7K100 SATA"

I've searched for hard drive compatibility on the forums, and people have said "boy my 7K100 is awesome" but have not run into this problem before.

Will ANY of these drives from newegg work?

Had a quick look at the main IBM site and it looks like you need ATA-100, but then I'm not an expert on upgrading HDDs. Maybe type in your model number and see what options/accessories come up.

You just don't want the SATA drive. it has the wrong connector for the Thinkpad. You need the 44 pin connector (IDE, ATA, etc). Post a link to what you are looking at and we will tell you go or no-go.
