Dead battery or what? (X31)

#1 Post by RS_003 » Fri Dec 23, 2005 3:46 am

Hello,

I purchased an X31 second-hand about 3 months ago.
Since 4 days when I reach 20% capacity on the battery it jump to 5% and starts beeping (and showing a flashing orange battery led)

Strangely enough I can work for an other 5 minutes at 0 percent before the darn thing shuts down.

Specs on the battery:

Panasonic
First use date: 2004-06
Full charge cap: 41.50 (hasn’t changed the last 2 months)
Design cap: 47.52
Cycle count 43
Battery health: Green.

So… I am confused… Should this be covered by warranty? Because it doesn’t seem to be the cells them self, but more the controller h/w in the battery.

Any thoughts?

Now that doesn't look good at all. Either the battery or the charge level monitor chip/charger circuitry. I believe it is the battery.
The bad news is that IBM like all others offers only 12 months warranty, and as you wrote, the 12 are up and gone, but it's worth a try, you never know.

You could think its one of the cells, but then when the capacity drops from 20% to 5% it should give me a warning (setting battery health to orange or red) ... allas ... I would suspect that to happen, since this also happened on a T21 which I owned. (when I hit 60% on that thing, I suddenly had only 10% left)

So Ill go for the battery hardware, what do you think? :)
