IBM parts question and 6 cell SONY battery...

#1 Post by atlacatl » Mon Jul 12, 2004 10:44 am

So I want to get the 6 cell Sony battery and I called IBM parts...

I'm in Canada and the price of this battery (Sony with part #: 92P1011) is $199.00 CDN.

The price for the Sanyo (Part #: 08K8193) is $159.00 CDN.

They are both 6 cell batteries...

Now I'm ready to order and ask about the warranty. The sales rep informs me that I have a 90 day period. I know that batteries have a 1 yr. warranty, so I asked what was the difference from buying from 1 800 SHOP IBM (Aside from the price, since buying through here the price is $249.00 and the warranty being 1 yr.) and the person informs me that the battery "could be used OR new." Meaning refurbished or not...

So, my question for those who have bought batteries through the parts department directly - If I buy this battery, will I be given a used battery - With a few cycles in it? Or is it likely to be brand new? I'm thinking it's a battery, and I don't really want a used one (Who probably failed, if it was returned once already).

It's the $50.00 luck draw, I guess...

Any thoughts/comments?

I have received replacement batteries from IBM (warranty replacements) that have 1 cycle on them - never more. Manufacture dates no more than 8-10 weeks ago.

Not sure if it safe or not, but you do have 90 days to decide right?

As for the prices, I'm surprised the Sony one costs more. I wonder if this is due to production cost, or just higher demand?

I ordered the one from IBM parts - Save $50.00 Canadian AND the battery had 0 cycles - The packaging was not brand new, however the battery does look ok...

BTW, the SONY batter barely moves - It's a great fit...

I would assume that your computer keeps track of the charging cycles, not the battery (do the batteries have memory chips in them??), so I'd assume any battery that was new to your computer would show as being on its first cycle. Am I wrong?
