Matshita dvd ram ug-822S drive won't show up, is detected

I have a problem with my the dvd-ram of my t43p. I put in the drive and the green lights on the side turn on. I can eject the disk tray fine. The problem is that it won't show up in my computer, so I can't play cds or dvds. Also, I can't mount cd or dvd images. I tried using system restore but it would not restore settings. When I take out or put in the drive, it makes the detection noise, and the system tray icon says that it is ready to be removed. I checked the device manager for properties on the drive and it says that "Windows successfully loaded the device drivers for the hardware but cannot find the hardware device (code 41)." I don't know what to do. I've read about deleting certain keys from the registroy and about uninstalling the dvd-ram and reinstalling it. I'd rather not risk it so if anyone has any suggestions, please reply.
