T30 & wireless and ThinkVantage Access Connections

#1 Post by silo » Wed Dec 28, 2005 1:28 am

I have a T30 (2356 56U) that I bought on eBay. It does not seem to have built in wireless capability, though it does have the little chevron-like places on either side of the outer bezel of the LCD.

I am using a Linksys PC Card with wireless B/G to connect to my home network (also Linksys).

Two questions:

(1) I had to remove ThinkVantage Access Connections because it seemed ot foul up my connect to the LAN, giving me a couple of error messages, one about an improper termination, and another one that kept popping up every couple of seconds. And I could not connect with the LAN, though it could SEE the network.

Is this a basic problem with the Access Connections or a one-time anomaly?

(2) Can I get the IBM internal wireless card and install it myself? I guess I first have to ask if the markings (chevron-like) on the outer edge of the LCD bezel are the antennae for the wireless card. If so, can I get the card and is it better than the Linksys PC Card I'm currently using. And is it relatively inexpensive?

And will you come over here and install it for me? :)

Any help much appreciated.

The TAWBOOK indicates your T30 is wireless upgradeable. This can be easily verified by opening the cover over the mini-pci slot and looking for the white and black antenna wires which should have the pull-tabs attached indicating MAIN & AUX. They should be tucked into a little pocket.

Installation is a snap, literally. Just snap the card in place and snap the connectors onto the card. Even if your machine is not "wireless upgradeable," you can buy the antennas and either install them in the screen like factory or take the much easier route and just lay them under the keyboard.

Most folks find the range of built-in wi-fi exceeds that of a PC card due to the larger antennas.

I will gladly come over and do the installation for you. I only charge $500 an hour plus travel expenses.

Sorry, I can't help you with the AC issue.

Thanks. Last night I opened the back and found the MAIN and AUX wires and the open slot. Now all I gotta do is figure out the correct mini pci wireless card to get and I guess I'm golden. ANy hints on that?
