If your machine has a CD or DVD drive and you have access to a machine with a CD or DVD burner and a floppy, you can make a bootable cd from the floppy. Just Google "making a bootable CD."

The following is the latest version that you can get online (IBM doesn't let anyone buy the diskette unless they are a business partner).

ThinkPad Maintenance Diskette V1.69

Note that you need to type S1 in front of the type/serial number. Example: S1<type><serial>.

Note that you need to type S1 in front of the type/serial number. Example: S1<type><serial>.
Also note that depending on your system you may have to "delete" the old serial number before you "add" the new one. My 770s do not require this (or the S1 preceeding the s/n) but my T30 does. Since my T30 requires deleting the old s/n and the preceeding "S1," I assume yours, also being a newer model, may also require this. Additionally, in order to perform these operations, you will have to enter the operation number, which I believe is 20 for the system s/n. This can be verified by viewing your serial numbers. You will notice the serial number for each component, i.e. system board, CPU, video board, etc. will be preceeded by a number such as 80, 40, 20, etc. That is the operation number you'll have to enter. (It happens to be the offset address in the EEPROM.)

There is a menu setting in the BIOS to lock it and prevent changes.
System Help wrote:Lock BIOS Settings enables or disables the function that protects items in the BIOS Setup Utility from being changed by a user who does not have the supervisor password. By default, this setting is disabled. If you set the supervisor password and enable this function, no one but you can change any items in the BIOS Setup Utility
