Long unexplained 1-Sec beep, T43, week old!

#1 Post by Domain » Thu Dec 29, 2005 3:08 pm

Today, twice, the notebook emitted a long 1 second beep from inside the notebook. The machine was muted both times. Once it happened on AC, once on battery. Any ideas?

I have searched but haven't found much about it.

did the beep occur when you switched from ac to battery, vice versa, or just randomly while surfing?

So far's I know, MUTE button does not mute system beeps, only the audio device. So getting a beep from the system could indicate ... power change, or...?

Also, on some systems, when I've disabled the sound device, or selected no sounds in Windows, the beep takes over for OS events. YMMVAPW (your mileage may vary and probably will).

Randomly surfing. Once when I was on AC, and not playing with the power, once while on battery, and not playing with the power still.

The next time it beeps, immediately go to: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. See if any events were logged at the time of the beep.

You can also run System Diagnostics from PC-Doctor for Windows. It should be in your All Programs list off of the Start menu.

I clocked one at 2:37 today, event viewer shows nothing. Closest events at 2:36 are only DHCP errors.

I've disabled the low battery warning, I have left on power state beeps as that goes through the volume controlled speakers.

Maybe there's a blackout, and after a while it's back again?

My guess...

It just did it again..no log of an error. :(

It usually does it twice a day, now. I'm sick of fighting with Lenovo, first they order me too many laptops, jerk me around about it, screw around with returning things, now this t43 will probably go back to be fixed. If I can get a workaround, I'll use it...

Having trouble with support? Read Cem Kaner's fine blog of his problems with Alienware, he has good advice on how to resolve issues....

I meet the same problem, and I found another guy in this forum also has the same problem.
Although it doesn't affect the running of the programme, it just freaked me out.
The Machine type and model is "T43 2668 - IVZ".

Did it happen while you were typing? I sometimes get a beep when I am typing fast (or atleast attempting to accurately). It happens when I hit multiple keys at the same time. It happened the first day I got my T43 and a few other times thereafter because it's the first laptop I have ever owned; so, I wasn't used to the low profile keys. I've since gotten used to the keyboard, but hopefully the thai kb that's coming will fix it entirely.

Five or more keys make the system alert you, but it doesn't do that while muted.

Check if you've got a virus scanner there, and perhaps it's notifying you of failed updates with a beep. Or a funny virus itself, made to annoy ;)

Every once in a while, my old 1.8" HDD in my X used to emit a soft beep when the heads would park in order to save power (regardless of whether AC was plugged in or not - it was a feature of the drive itself). Replaced the HDD eventually as it started to emit other sounds.

Here is an idea!
Download Sysoft Sandra Lite (free) and let it run. It will tax your system, and if you have a weak component, Sysoft Sandra should flush it out. Note however, I ran this on a new desktop PC, and it only ran a few minutes before I got a temperature warning; so you may run across the same thing. I haven't tried this on my T42.

Download Sites for Sandra Lite (Win32 x86, Win64 AMD64/EM64T Unicode - Windows 2000/XP/2003)

I have it running Sandra now and I'll tell you what happens, if anything.

Thanks!

Edit..nada.

I seem to have fixed it, Saturday I pulled out the battery for a few hours, and AC. Plugged it in later, used it, no beeps as of yet.

Sometimes when I press a lot of buttons at the same time, it will beep.
Maybe that is what happened to you too?

No, but I do know what you are talking about in that regard. The fix for that is non-sloppy typing :)

I've gotten it fixed now though, thanks just the same. :)

For anybody who wants to disable the keyboard beep -- there is a way:

1. Open up Device Manager (System Properties > Hardware).
2. In the "View" menu, choose "Show hidden devices."
3. Under the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" category, find "Beep." Right-click and choose "disable."
4. Restart your computer.

I've been told this works, but haven't tried it out myself, so YMMV.

Bump...

I'm just curious if anyone else has this recurring problem. It seems like no matter what I do, it does it at least once a day. It's annoying the crap out of me.

I even tried reflashing the BIOS and EC but they are already the latest.
