T30 a few questions

#1 Post by tcwrc » Sun Jan 01, 2006 2:50 pm

Wish I had joined this group long ago. Bought my T30 a couple years ago from TigerDirect as a refurb. Warranty is up. #1 question is, how do I attain USB 2.0 capability? I'm handy and not at all squeemish about opening her up and doing some surgery. Just need proper correct guidance. #2 question - lately if powered off (not sleep but really off) will not restart and gives a beep code of 3113 or 31 13, not sure if it's 2 codes or one. Either way appears to be a HD connector issue and seems if I wiggle and press in on the HD drive it eventually will boot. That's really all I'm wondering about, it's been a good machine and I'm hoping to get another year or two before I replace it. Running XP Pro. Thanks in advance for any help. Happy new year!

I also have a T30...too bad about the connection for the HD...just keep wiggling it I guess. About the USB 2.0...there is no way to modify your TP to add this. Buy a PC card that has USB2.0 on it. I bought one from eBay that also has Firewire....I am well pleased with it and it works very well.

Are you using any PCMCIA adapters? If you are try pulling them out and reboot to see if you get that message.
What beeps are you getting?

I don't find your exact beep codes in the T30 HMM. I do find 3-3-1 and 1-3-3-1, both of which indicate DIMMs as the likely suspect, followed by a bad system board. I had 1-3-3-1 on mine and suspected my HDD as most every time I removed the screw keeping it in place it would work. Sometimes it would work after removing and reinserting. I finally checked out the HMM and decided to return mine rather than continue fooling with it as there were other issues as well. You might try playing with your RAM modules, i.e. if you have 2, remove one; swap slots if that doesn't help, then try the other module. If you have only one, try swapping slots, perhaps borrow one from someone.

I believe a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card is the only way for you get 2.0. They can easily be found for under $20. They start at $13.50 at Newegg, and about $10 shipped on eBay.
