sticker removal

#1 Post by johnchan » Mon Jan 02, 2006 11:15 pm

Hello, does anyone know how to remove those stickers on the palmrest? They get pretty unsightly after 3 years. I suppose I can replace the whole palmrest, but that'd cost money, and who knows if it will be available then...

just take a sharp edge, pry up and start pulling, they come off with a little work, then just rub the glue off with your fingers. I've never had to use any chemicals to get them off that might mess up the finish. The glue takes a little while to rub off, it's like rubber cement.

I'm sure this wouldn't be a problem with many newer ThinkPads that just have the plastic palmrests but those stickers should either be peeled off immediatley or left on forever. Even after every bit of glue and residue was removed, you can still see an outline from the Intel Inside sticker on my 380's palmrest. Then again, unlike current ThinkPad models, the palmrest on my 380 doesn't have any of the plastic exposed, it's painted.

I've tried using chemicals on my crappy dell, and it turned the black finish white. It's pretty funny, and I'm proud of it - the Dell deserved it.

If it's like removing pinstriping on a car, a judicious use of heat could help a lot. On an automobile, I've used a heat lamp to soften the adhesive and allow the pinstiping to come off fairly easily. You could try a heat lamp or hair dryer. Of course you want to be careful and not let things get too hot. If you still have some adhesive left, try cooking oil or olive oil to remove it. I've used these oils before to remove adhesives successfully, where a stronger solvent would have likely done damage.

A little bit of wet soap/detergent on paper towel may remove any sticky residue from the stickers. It worked for me when I peeled off a label from my X20. Fingers didn't cut it.

If you don't like what it looks like under the stickers once you get them off, you can buy new ones. Ebay is one source for cheap ones, wireless4laptops is one vender.

didnt want to show any preference towards M$ and also that my lappy had a Celeron M :d
The intel sticker was easy to remove. came off without leaving a mark.
The M$ XP stuff was bad..it left lotsa gooey stufff on the palm rest. used vaseline moisturising lotion and linen to remove it.
Time of removal: Intel 5 seconds
M$ :5 minutes

I use a cleaner called something like Citru-Solv. It's a gentle, citrus-based adhesive remover, and it comes in handy all the time.

posted in the wrong thread

if you place a hot cup of tea on the sticker snd in a minute the glue will become soft and you dont even need to use any nails since stickers will come off by itself

I removed all three (ati, centrino, windows xp) just by prying with a plastic spoon. I used the bottom of the sticker to dab away the glue left on the laptop, then a few rubs and you would never know it was there. I've only had it for a month or so, that might have made it easier.

Vegetable oil. It will remove all residue without damaging anything...then again, you'll have to remove the vegetable oil residue afterward.

What about discoloration? I found myself putting the Pentium II sticker back on my ThinkPad 600E because there was a visible rectangle with the Intel logo imprinted in it even after removing all residue and cleaning computer SEVERAL times.

@ AlphaKilo470:

The 600 series palmrests are a different from some of the newer laptops, such as the T2x. They are a rubberized plastic as opposed to the hard plastic of the T2x and higher. There might be much of a discoloration problem on the harder plastic palmrests.

If I'm not mistaken, the 760, 765, 770, 600, X2x and S30 were the ThinkPads with rubber wristpads, the rest (or most of the rest) had standard plastic wristpads. What I meant to ask about though was if anyone has found a solution (other than removing the sticker while still new) to take care of the discoloration.

I took my stickers off after about a year. There were some different colored rectangles for a little while, but they've since blended back in.
