Any Z60t owners have trouble reading BLANK CD-R discs?

#1 Post by riceboy54 » Tue Jan 03, 2006 6:21 pm

I've tried two different Multiburner drives and it does something weird when trying to read BLANK CD-R's. It spins up, seeks, then spins down and repeats for about 5 times before giving up. Theres about a 50/50 chance that it actually reads the blank and then I am able to burn it. Otherwise, I have to pop it out and pop it back in and repeat. I've called IBM about it twice and they have sent me a new replacement and it still does the same. My only other option they said is to have the machine picked up and tested. Of course, I don't want to be without the computer for 4 days so I want to see if anyone else seems to have or has the same problem.

Types of CD-R's tried,

Verbatim
Dynex
Office-Depot

I may just go back to Best Buy and pickup another pack, maybe Fujifilm or Memorex just to try again. Its not that big of a deal but I would like to know if something is actually WRONG with my NEW machine or if its just a media or firmware problem.

I have the Sonic DLA and RecordNow software installed. I also disabled window's built in cd option. And i've restored the system back to factory settings already.

I've also tried uninstalling the Secondary IDE and rebooting and windows reinstalls it.

Any options or comments would be helpful,

Thank-you,
:D

ps. IBM's support is amazing, I never had to wait on the phone for a rep and I called at 3am before and actually got someone. Very impressed. Also the replacement drive got here in 2 days which I think is good.

Where are your CD/R's manufactured? I've had excellent results with Verbatim's made in Taiwan, and poor results with Verbatims made in India. Amazingly they use different dyes!

I know Plextor had a list of approved CD/R's on their website awhile back. You might check the manufacturer's website of the multiburner for the same. I don't know, is the multiburner Panasonic?

The multiburner is MATSHITA. (Panasonic I think).

I finally got it to work, I bought a set of Fujifilm CD-R's that were made in Japan (the bottom of the cd is more of a blue/green rather than a bright green).

The Verbatims I had were made in Taiwan
Dynex and Office Depot were also made in Taiwan.

Wow, this sucks that I can only use made in Japan CD-R's. These costed a premium as opposed to the onsale items.

Strange how yours works with the Made In Taiwan Verbatims. Maybe the new drives are pickier (one of my multiburner drives say OCT 2005 other is SEPT 2005)

Anyway, thanks for the help!!

Sorry for not being clear. I do not have a multiburner. The experience that I was relating was with a Plextor drive in a desktop PC.

Here are a couple of links that may be useful. CD Media guide 1 | CD Media guide 2

For what it's worth, I use Ritek printable CD-R's and the "Open BLANK CD" dialog pops right up! I had uninstalled the SONIC junk (including DLA), and installing NERO 7, though, so it may be the SONIC software causing the problem. I never did care for the SONIC suite of software.

I have the same problem, the multiburner in my Z60t cannot recognize CD-R disk. I am using TDK with manufacturer ID = "CMC Magnetics" which supports 12X to 48X speed. I haven't rang IBM or Lenovo yet,... do you think I should? they may have firmware upgrade...

Never had problem with this CD-R before on any one of my desktop burners.

strange solution

#7 Post by photorugby » Thu Mar 09, 2006 10:40 pm

I have the same problem with blank CD-R on the z60t.
My strange and hopefully temporary solution is to turn the laptop vertical, with the drive at the top, and then the cd "sets" and the drive recognizes the CD-R.

I'll have to check with Lenovo support to get a better longterm solution.

Yep, same problem here with HP CD-R. I was creating the recovery CD about one hour ago and the same problem as you happened to me.
