How much memory in Thinkpad i1200?

Older ThinkPads.. from the 600, the 7xx, the iSeries, 300, 500, the Transnote and, of course, the 701

How much memory in Thinkpad i1200?

#1 Post by Ezekuel » Tue Jul 13, 2004 7:25 am

I have an old Thinkpad i series - i1200. (The type number is 1161-93G).

I want to install more RAM. The laptop have 64MB of RAM now.
How much can I install?
Can I install 256MB? So that I get 320MB...

I hope somebody can help me with this question, 64MB of RAM is not enough..... :)

192MB is the max. So just get a 128MB 100MHz SDRAM SoDIMM module. Part number: 20L255, FRU: 20L0265

Do you know why the limit is so small?
Isn`t that something IBM could solve with a BIOS upgrade?

The system probably won't recognize it, and you'll get an error message.

Thats to bad..... :(

But look at this page http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... IGR-4WQPZ7

Look at part number 13.
It says: DIMM 64MB
DIMM 128MB
DIMM 256MB

Why?

I have seen that one too, but the other IBM site still claims 192MB as the max memory. Check the Hardware Maintenance Manual. It might clear it up.

I borowed a 256MB module from a friend now, and it works great! :D
Now we know that a 256MB module will work fine in the i1200..

Maybe 512MB will work as well...... hehe

256MB didn't work for me

#9 Post by AlphaGJohn » Mon Sep 13, 2004 9:49 am

I tried a 256MB DIM some years ago and the i1200 I have didn't recognize it (showed 64MB of RAM available). My i1200 says it's a Type 1161-41U (has a 550MHz processor) and came with Win ME on a 4GB HDD (which has been upgraded to a 20GB w/o difficulty; also upgraded from Win ME to XP Home).

My BIOS is version V1.10F
The BIOS updates available for the i1200 don't list my model number (but IBM gives different model numbers to refurbs [which is what I've got] but you can't look those up on their on-line system--annoying). The info on the BIOS mentions nothing about more RAM and when I wrote to IBM a couple of years back, the reply I got was that the i1200 wasn't designed to handle more than 192MB.

I'd be curious to know what model & BIOS version you have; I'd be very pleased to have more RAM in mine, but I'm guessing it won't work for me.

Thanks,

John
