Just announced today, the X60 and X60s at CES.

I am hoping this year to replace my pre-Centrino X30. This new, dual-core X60 will be high on my list of possible replacements to consider. But there's much uncertainty in my life right now, so I'm not ready to take the plunge just yet. I'm a big fan of small form facter though. The X30 was one of the best laptop purchase decisions I've ever made.

I'll likely wait until my X40 goes out of warranty (July 2007) and hopefully by then they'll have announced the X61s.

I would love to get one, and I will (unless a really great deal on a new X32 or X41 comes along first). Of course, I would have to sell my T41p, too.

Hell I haven't even figured out my X41T yet so I hope they wait a bit longer for an X60T so as not to tempt me. Then I'll likely let others try them out for about 6-months first. Besides, with Lenovo's customs issues it will likely be May before the first T60 or X60 is in anyone's hands besides the employees and the usual lot anyway! When I ordered an X41 as soon as announced the first 3 (April, May, then June) came with multiple (4+) pixel issues each. It was only once we got to October that I started receiving quality screens. I hope this isn't the same with a T/X60, but with this supposidy a major model change, and by a new owner, I'm going to (try to) be patient.

i'll most likely order one before the start of school next year in the fall. i really like the improvements. as for the potential problems that would come as the initial buyer, i will cover the risk with a nice 3 yrs anything happens it better be fixed warranty.

i'm in. as soon as they start shipping i will fork over my amex for a fully configured x60s. sounds like a killer ultraportable. my x40 has served me so well that i would only ever buy another powerbook or thinkpad, period.

Well... I might... the royally ****** the keyboard.

It looks like noting now... just a black keyboard, instead of a keyboard with red an blue hints, and decent sound / access ibm buttons, no.. Ill try to replace it as soon ill get my hands on a X60

Depending on the price, i will most likely get a X60s.

I like the fact that they squeze more power and more battery time out of it. Geting battery time up to 7-9 hours will be most welcome for me.

On the lenovo comparison page it says that both the x60 and x60s will get Duo cpu's on select systems. Guess we need to see a new tabook or two to get the really nice models.

X60: THE replacement for the X32.
X60s: You can look at it two ways. Way one: the replacement for the X41, except with a 2.5" HDD. Way two: An X60 with slower CPUs and a smaller heatsink. Either way, more expensive and slower than the X60.

I'll be getting an R51e to replace my X21, it looks like (

Just curious: why should the X60s be more expensive than the X60? Usually both smaller size and faster CPU carry a premium, but is the X60s' smaller size bound to be worth more than the X60's extra power?

Just like the X31 / X32 is cheaper than the X40 / X41.

Smaller means more technology, and thus more expensive.

It's difficult to compare the X31/32 to the X40/41, because they are different generation units with a different hardware platform. I haven't noticed a huge price difference between the X32 and the X41. At least two objective factors make the X41 more expensive than the X32: 1) 1.8" drives are more expensive than 2.5" drives, 2) the X41 has the fingerprint reader, which the X32 lacks. These factors won't be at stake when comparing the X60 to the X60s.

The X40 also has a better battery, and its lighter (more expensive materials)

I find the X31 and X40 (I own) not so different from each other.

But here the X31 is cheaper for those reasons, an LV cpu costs more, and the lighter the expensiver. Atleast here..

But I could be wrong for the rest of the world

I will wait until x61 or even later. I never trust the first version of new product. I have not seen the real thing in person. What I worry about the new machine is the heat from dual core CPU.

Thinkpad X60s for €1695 - that's about the same as the X41. Two minor notes: it's a model for students and it includes the 4-cell battery, which doesn't bring impressive uptimes. I hope they'll sell a version with more battery power sometime soon - I'll buy one, provided they swap the german keyboard with a Dutch or US keyboard (which shouldn't be too much of a problem).

I am afraid the X60s is not powerful enough, and I would miss the optical drive. Therefore I'd rather go with the 14inch T60.

Docking / external drive?

And why should it be to slow?
The only disadvantage I see is the graphics processor

Docking stations are too expensive.

I am waiting for the prices of the T60 though, but I expect it will be more liable to buy a 14 inch T60 for portability and performance than the X60 with dockingstation. The difference is weight is not very great.

That may be the best option for you indeed.

Since the X60s with dock will be around 1.8Kilograms, and the T60 will be around 2.0Kilograms, that’s only 200Grams difference for allot more performance

In my case the lighter the better, I really liked my 1Kilogram Sony T1, but the 10" screen was right on the edge of being big enough for 5+ hours work a day (the resolution was not the problem)
So ill take an X60s... Not to heavy (I travel allot) and not too small.

I second RS_003. For me, the lighter & smaller the better. I am currently an owner of T43. I bought this T43 thinking exactly the same as SpaRood i.e. kill two birds with one stone - a perfect balance between performance and weight. Soon I regreted my choice.

I've seen and used both 14" or 15" T43's. But either way, the build quality of T series was not the same as the good ol' days. e.g. The left hand side palm rest near the PCMCIA slot is especially weak. You can't carry it with one hand - too heavy for that. Sometimes you need to hold it with one hand e.g. openning door to a meeting room with one hand while carrying your laptop with the other. If I hold it with one hand, I feel like the main chasis is going to crack. I feel it isn't too solid.

Also, it is too heavy to carry it for a long time (a couple of minutes is fine but not for long). e.g. try to carry it between meetings with all sorts of documents and reports and cables so on. Not only that, my LCD screen has two dead/stuck pixels. Imagine a brand-new laptop you buy has these many annoying dead pixels and you paid a premium price for it.

The thing is that I hardly require an optical drive for day-to-day stuff. I only need it when I need to install new software. Once I install Windows and all other S/W I require, I seldom need access to CD's. For me, having to carry an extra weight of optical drive is not worthwhile. It's like carrying an emergency medicine box which you don't need about 99% of the time but only 1% of the time.

Performance-wise, I must say I was so disappointed with performance of my T43. Believe or not, my good old X22 can boot faster and feels faster than T43. My T43 takes longer to boot than HP presario laptops with integrated graphics and slower CPU's. Why is that? I really don't know. It puzzles me too. It was this slow from Day 1, and certainly it wasn't the level of performance I would have expected from a T series.

So why do I regret going from R series to T series? I was disappointed with performance and weight. It did not kill these two birds for me. So I'm going to try the new X series. Performance-wise, there shouldn't be that much difference for normal business usage. Graphics, I don't care as I'm an office user. The form factor, I'll certainly appreciate its lightness and slimness. Battery life, perfecto!! Is there a considerable benefit to move up to the T series? Probably not.

They said that ETA will be 2 to 3 weeks. But I don't trust this. I'm prepared to wait upto 6 weeks as long as I get a LCD with zero dead/stuck pixels.
