R52 Thermal problem - 95C in stress
Notebook hardware control program show, that in stress the Pentium 750M is at maximum almost 90' Celsius. This sounds to, a bit too high.
The computer is attached in to the dock.
Is the dock, the main reason for this high temperature?
I cleaned all dust everywhere and even checked under the hood but no help.
Any ideas folk?

Now the problem appears also without the dock. The fancontrol software tells that in stress the cpu reaches as high as 97 celsius temperature and sometimes this machine just shutdowns suddenly. I rose the computer 15mm from the desk, so that the fan gets cool air but no hope.LtTPfan wrote:Can you hear the fan running or feel air circulating thru the vents? Did you try disconnecting the dock?
In battery powersave mode the processor gets so cool that fancontrol puts the fan off for a while, which i found nice
Also, the ucgather.exe process really hogs the cpu power for a minute or two in start and sometimes. What the **ll is going on..
Virus/spyware double checked. Fancontrol software is in control, and this problem appears also when BIOS controls the fan.

I received my brand new R52 (18494WU) from newegg 2 days ago, and while I like the machine generally, the fan noise is very annoying, particularly because I bought this machine to replace the loud desktop... even on the lowest performance custom tuned in Power Manager it is still running fairly loud. I was hoping that it will be quiet machine, maybe not as quiet as my second laptop (iBook G4), but not loud.
I see that there are some 55+ running processes and 250MB of RAM memory used, does it have impact on the temperature or not? CPU is usually 0-5% usage, idling.
I didn't install any IBM updates yet, would those maybe help? I noticed there are BIOS updates available too..
Thanks for info.

I've installed all the updates with software installer.
Memory usage is 488Mt/1024Mt (2x512). It doesn't have effect on temperature, bacause processor usage is 0-7% in rest.
I think it's all about that the fan can't transfer enough heat from the processor. With full power profile, in 100% cpu usage, it's 95C in 15 seconds. Doesn't make sense and it's higher than other Pentium mobile processors.

Newarkizise,
what program do you use to find out the exact temperatures on components? I used to use those which generally came with my systems, but have nothing installed now. Is there any temperature monitor preinstalled, if not, which should I download? I could check my temps then and post them for comparison.
I have the fan running (the left side exhaust) even on lowest performance optimised AC setting: maximum CPU performance: "lowest", fan control: "balance all parameters" (there isn't anything lower available), screen brightness: full (level 7). I also set Powerplay for videocard to lowest performance...
I see that you tried to lift the laptop off the desk surface , and it didn't help; I didn't try that since I see it had no impact on yours. I used to do this with success on my old Inspiron 4000; when I raised the back of the laptop by putting pencil under it (some 1/4" up), the air intake at the bottom right corner had better clearance, and fan hardly ever kicked-in. Now I'm running this brand new Centrino IBM on performance level comparabel with 4+ years old P3 Dell, and have it still noisier.

Oh well... I checked out threads related to ThinkPad fan control around this site and elsewhere, and the fan-always-on (or nearly always) is obviously design feature. I may experiment with the 3rd party fan control application available at this site, but I wish that IBM/Lenovo would officially address this issue.... if I knew about this upfront, I would've bought laptop from different manufacturer. I do like R52 a lot, but the fan noise is a major disappointment – the main reason to buy this machine was to replace my somewhat louder desktop PC.
BTW, last night I updated BIOS, embedded controller and all the drivers & software to the latest available versions, but no noticeable difference in fan behavior. I may try to weed out unneeded services and applications to bring the process count under 30 (so to about 1/2 of current state), but I doubt it will help.
If anyone would come up with some simple solution how to throttle the fan rotation or decrease the system temperature, would be great to hear it.
