Help! My G41 is dead! Suddenly :-(

#1 Post by nhardin » Fri Jan 06, 2006 9:04 am

I sent a request to IBM ESC and got an immediate reply. They overnighted a depot box DHL and I put in my dead system and it went out overnight the same day. 1 day to fix and overnight back to me. 3 days and I have a working system again ModemPCB was hosed and stopping the system from booting. hmmmmmmmm. don't know why, but changed my boot sequence to HDD0 then CD
My warrenty lasts until July 2006, so we'll see if it holds up now. ;-javascript:emoticon('')
Laughing)

==========================================
Last nigt when I went to boot my G41:

1. pushed the power button
2. NumLoc and Keyboard lights blink.
3. Fan come on for about 2 sec.
4. DVD/CD light keeps blinking
5. no beeps
6. no IBM screen,
7. nothing

I tried removing the additional crucial stick I put in 3 weeks ago.
As of night before last, everything was working great.

Is this my DVD/CD, my CPU, my ram, or do I just need to remove the A/C and battery and press the "on" button 10 or 40 time then hold on the next?

Additional info - removed ram, tried to boot, got 4-3-1-4 beep codes and the fan ran continuously. Putting in 1 stick (new crucial) no joy, fan starts then stops (this has been normal off and on behavior for the life of the TP)

Thanks for any help.

IBM repaired it and it died again night before last. Same problem. Last time they replaced the HDD. This time, they say they are replacing the system board. I hope this finally fixes the problem.

Anyone else experiencing this with a G41?

Two dead G41s ... 9mo old and 3mo old

#4 Post by dwm » Wed Apr 12, 2006 1:24 am

My system froze Sunday ... first it started giving bogus answers (e.g., dns lookup for ping returned 11.x.y.z instead of 10.x.y.z) then it just froze. Powered off, and from that time forward, power on runs fan for a few seconds, flashes the shift indicators, tweaks the CD/DVD drive and does nothing more. If I place a bootable CD in the drive, it flashes a little longer. This system arrived in Januarh 06.

My daughter's G41, froze Monday afternoon. Some minor differences. On the first power on following removal of all power and restore, she gets a beep code 4xxx (don't have it here), fan action and nothing.

Neither system shows any activity on the LCD. She has tried an external monitor to no avail.

Her system arrived July 05. This is the second failure on her system. First was last October (05) and was an inoperative LCD.

There critical failures on two G41s ... not impressive reliability. I'm writing this on my 770X which suffered the expected hard drive failure 3 years ago but just keeps on ticking.

Both systems are under extended on-site repair contracts. I was promised replacement of my system board today (tuesday) between 8 and 5pm. Not only did that not happen, I didn't even get a phone call advising me of the delay. When I called IBM Service (IBM provides US service for Lanovo), I learned that the part was apparently not ordered from the correct depot and if I hadn't called, it isn't clear when a replacement would have been shipped. For next day service, it appears to now be Thursday at the earliest ...

My daughter called Monday early evening, which could be argued made Wednesday the due date for repair, was promised she would be called by by the support center. The call never happened. On her follow up call, they told her the parts she needs won't be available until Friday which since she will be home for the weekend means she is w/o a computer until Monday.

Having paid a premium for a top of the line laptop and an additional premium for service, I find this VERY distressing.

Thanks for tolerating my vent. If you want a fast laptop with a nice high resolution display, this is a hard to beat system. BUT my word to the wise is that you should keep your backups current. :?

As far as I remember, you are supposed to replace your CMOS battery.

Don't trust my words too much.

Search the forum for "CMOS battery".
