Thinkpad T20 No backlight at all. NO HIGH voltage from inver

#1 Post by Krusher » Sat Jan 07, 2006 2:03 am

OK, Hi everyone long story short.
thought i got a good deal on a laptop Which APPEARED to have a simple backlight issue..

Well as of now not..

T20 14.1 screen.

NO backlight at all..
Bought 2 inverters on ebay....
this place claims tested good,
im giving them the benefit of the doubt they are good.
I get NO highvoltage off the backlight connectors.

checked ribbon cable connections.
all looked tight and were reseated..

Anyone else seen this issue/?

yes i tried the brighten screen option etc..

NO highvotage off the inverter..

cable SEEMS ok.. nothing bad on it noticed no pinched spots
no tears no obivous wear...

It sounds like it might be an issue with the mobo. You might try checking all the fuses for continuity. Beyond that you'd probably need schematics.

fuses? Do you know where and or how many fuses there are on

interesting, I didnt think they had fuses on the low voltage end of the motherboard..

Do you know the locations of these fuses?.

Everything else is up and going..
Image (*with no back light)
Video etc..

But I havent a clue where these fuses would be
(I am a tech so not totaly lost)
Just unsure of location..
wonder if surface mount or chip style..

Seems also in theory they would be more of a easy to
get to option.

No, I don't know the locations; I've never seen a T20 mobo but I have seen others and there were dozens of fuses. They are pretty easy to spot and their label on the board is preceded by an F, as in F1, F2, etc. They are surface mount devices, and require desoldering/soldering.

Surface Mount fuses, sounds like a POSSIBLE solution, Now to

Hurm..
Well at this point it cant hurt to much to considder this a POSSIBLE
option to fix the problem.

Now It comes to a matter of finding location
and to know what the ratings are to find out
if this is a waste of my time or possibly a fixable
laptop..

I hope to heck its a fixable laptop.
I have inested about 250ish in parts etc
to make this a great killer unit.
But If this ends up not repairable etc
Im going to sell off the parts to get my cash back..

I really would love to fix this tho..
I would like the option to finally retire my Pentium 1 100Mhz laptop
and only use it for a few specific tasks
