T43 to work with Vista!

#1 Post by DIGITALgimpus » Sun Jan 08, 2006 12:06 pm

At least according to this article
Other requirements included a SATA or 7200 rpm EIDE hard drive. For Vista on notebooks, Microsoft recommended the Acer Ferrari 3400, the Acer Ferrari 4000, the HP Pavillion zd8230, the IBM Thinkpad T43 and the Toshiba Tecra M4.
Getting those non-IBM 7200 RPM drives (fixing the 2010 error) is important.

Great to see this beast will be recommended for yet another os!

Vista works fine with all the hardware (except possibly the security chip - not sure yet) on a T43 with a 5400 rpm drive, 1GB RAM and the ATI X800 dispaly adapter. It also works fine with a T42p ditto except for display (the T42p has a ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2).

I should have been clearer on my previous post. Vista will run on older
computers but you may not be able to use the Aero interface. To run Aero,
you need a GPU that supports Windows Display Driver Model. It appears the
x300 does but GMA 900 does not so saying that any T43 can run Vista is a bit
misleading because some T43(GMA 900) will only be able to run it in the "classic xp" mode.

Any hints on how to enable Aero mode? I'm just getting around to installing Vista beta 2 and Longhorn Server beta 1....I'll be vm'ing on my T43 for now, but do have a full desktop install with a nice 3D card.

* Mobility™ Radeon® 9500 Series or higher
* FireGL™ V5000 (RV410GL) Series or higher
* FireGL™ V3100 Series or higher

The list is a bit confusing. The summary list says like that, but there's also Mobility FireGL 9000 and 7800 in the complete mobile radeon list, that support windows vista display driver model. DirectX 9 hardware support has been mentioned in many places, and that is not supported in FireGL 9000.

We'll see. First thing I'd do is to strip all the extra eye candy off anyway :)
