Im thinking about this for general backup, and photo storage.

I like the network capability and the print server.

However i am questioning the drive quality/reliability, and the compatibility with Linksys WRT-G54S router. Also what would the FTP server function do?

Anyone ever used this or anything like it?

No idea how that is.

I personally took an old Apple G3 and turned it into a file server. I think through it's life it's run 24x7 since 1998 with a few weeks off. It was a corporate computer I got for $50 when it was replaced. New HD, otherwise original.

I do have some UNIX admin experience, so managing it headless is no big deal to me.

No problems. I think it's current uptime is 80+ days, and only reboots for power outages or software updates. Other than that, nothing.
