Hard drive to hard drive

#1 Post by jmt » Sun Jan 08, 2006 10:25 pm

I made rescue and recovery DVDs off my T42 than removed my 5.4k 40 HD and installed a 7.2k 80 HD. The DVDs returned my new HD in the T42 back to factory state. I then put my old HD into a case and USB'd it to the T42. I could see everything in there however I could not find a way to move everything from that HD to the new one. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if it's your problem but there is at least one thread here indicating Windows balks if you have two hard drives connected to the same machine, running the same version of XP with the same key.

If you still have Rescue and Recovery (with Rapid Restore Ultra 4) on your old hard drive, put the old hard drive back into the ThinkPad and backup your drive to DVD's or CD/R's. Remove the old hard drive and put in the new one, then restore your backup by booting up into the Rescue and Recovery workspace using the blue Access IBM button at the start of the boot sequence. Note that both versions (the version on each hard drive) of Rescue and Recovery need to be the same versions (I think).

The above method is time-consuming but should give a good result. You will still have access to the Rescue and Recovery workspace on the new hard drive with this method (since you already restored to factory state).

I am sure that I am missing something very obvious since it seems to me that things are being over-complicated here. If all you are trying to move is data then it seems to me that you are better off ignoring R&R and just inserting the old drive into the USB case and doing a straight copy of the folders that you need directly from the old drive to the new.

Data (documents, photos, movies, mp3's, and individual files) yes, installed programs and updates no. It's not that easy. You can't copy programs and updates - they have to be reinstalled.

EDIT: What I meant was programs, drivers and updates have to be reinstalled or else restored from a backup (using backup and restore software). You can also clone a complete drive using imaging software like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.

You are not allowed to run two copies of the same license - it is not a glitch. After SP2, I put a new disk with a duplicate license for changeove reasons in the main drive and my existing disk in the ultra bay. After booting in the ultra bay, the main drive was not able to run. It would start and then complain about the license. I had to format it and start again. I always got rid of the second copy fairly promptly, but SP2 pretty much enforces it. For your purposes (ongoing use), you need another license.

Thanks all for your thoughts and ideas.

I tried a backup of the old HD with cd's using Nero without success. Doing it with IBM RR sounds like I might have better success.

If I tried Acronis True Image on my old HD and then used it for the new HD, how would it treat the items that are already on the new HD? Would it make duplicates on the new HD or would it only restore what is not there?
