T60 vs. MacBook Pro

#1 Post by onix » Tue Jan 10, 2006 4:58 pm

You guys are going to hate me for this, but Apple's new laptop http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/whatsinside.html is one compelling alternative to the T60. Consider the following:
  • Dual link DVI support
    256MB ATI X1600 GPU
    Built-in FireWire
    Built-in camera
    Optical audio I/O
    Backlit keyboard
If it could dual boot, or triple boot (Linux, W2K, OSX), I'm in heaven.

Drawbacks vs. T60 (mostly minor in my opinion):
  • Slightly larger
    Resolution 1440 x 900 on 15.4"
    Heavier at 5.6 lbs
    No fingerprint sensor
    No Cingular/Verizon antenna

That is one sweet piece of machinery. I would have to have some type of dual boot, since there is so little that I, myself, would be able to do without Windows/Linux.

Given apple's record for reliability, I would go for the thinkpad to save trouble in the future. Of course this is based on exeperience with G4 models and IBM made models of thinkpads, we have yet to see how the intel macs or the Lenovo thinkpads will hold up.

The MacBook Pro is overpriced. I am not really interested in MacOSX. For that price, I rather buy a T60p.

I think this topic should be moved here:http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewforum.php?f=13

I already have a Thinkpad as well as a Powerbook; they are both excellent machines, though I doubt that you would be able to dual boot to Windows on the MacBook Pro.

I doubt a T60p would debut at $2,499.00 as the higher end MacBook Pro is.

As much as I like the look of the T60, there is no denying that there is a lot Lenovo (and most others making Windows notebooks) could learn from Apple - the new machines are sweet. I think though that even if people get Windows running on the mac book pro - it probably won't be easy and would end up being more hassle than buying a T60.

If they bring out a proper media mac mini though I would certainly be temped just for under the TV.

Seriously,

The new power mac is very very tempting alternative. The specifications and features are pretty impressive.

Since I rely much on Windows I would have to stick to PCs. If there is a possibility of running Windows on the new mac I would seriously consider power mac.

Then again I would miss the trackpoint.

My suggestion would to purchase the machine that fits your needs best. If a MAC fits, then by all means go for it. I have business software and personal software that I must have and that I want all of will not run on MAC or Linux. Anyway, I like Windows better, so that is what fits me and I buy ThinkPads. (My machines all have one Linux or other on them but I can't run MAC OS). ... JD Hurst

It appears that this poll can combine two of its options. An AP article seems to suggest that the intel Macs have the ability to run Windows (i.e., it's not going to work out of the box), which was the general consensus before today.

Note that this article is posted everywhere (MSNBC, Yahoo). I'm going to drop the MSNBC link here.

I voted 'no' for the time being.

Apple notebooks are notoriously difficult to repair and upgrade. If an optical bay or HDD blows out on my T40, it takes me a minute or less to detach the defective part and replace it. RAM, keyboard, and wireless are similarly easy to replace.

PowerBooks and iBooks, in contrast, have fixed optical bays and HDDs that are sometimes really hard to remove (I think the iBook drive requires the unscrewing of 30+ screws and other components).

Undoubtedly the MacBook's external design is very elegant and functional, and OS 10.4 is also very nice, but I still like the ThinkPad better overall. I also think the T60 will be more durable.

I hope they don't plan on calling all of their new laptops MacBooks instead of PowerBooks. The PowerBook name is a very good marketing moniker and MacBook sounds like crap.

With that aside, I look forward to seeing the product on store shelves. I can't wait to see what it's like to run MacOS 10 on an x86 and still have the full support of Apple.

This is certainly will pursuade a lot of Windows users to buy mac hardware and have a dual boot on their system.

I would wait about a year or so before the purchase though. Pretty impressive.
