general hardware x2.. question

#1 Post by luispaniccia » Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:00 am

Hi all,
had anyone, anytime, anyhow thought about changing the video card?
I know that is not a normal question, taking in consideration that the video is (as normal) onboard. still a chip, right? so there should be a chance, right?

thanks!

It's not a socketed chip that can be easily changed out, it's a soldered on surface mounted IC. Any replacement would have to have the exact same pinout for proper connection to the display and support chips, etc.

er.. yep! but had anyone thought about it?
could you imagine what that could mean?.. not an easy job .. for sure but then you could have full 3d support on a x21 for example.

The idea is not to play Doom3 or Half life2 is just to get a bit more graphics than 4mb or 8mb

cheers!

If you want more graphics, it would be far cheaper to buy a notebook with better graphics. That has always been the weakness of the X-series, and judging by the new X60 series with their integrated (shared) graphics, that isn't likely to change anytime soon.

The X21 is a terrific computer, very small and light weight with good battery life. Those were the only factors in its design, with speed, graphics and other "performance" specs sacrificed to get a cooler running machine that maximizes its battery power.

I have an X22 (same thing only with 8MB graphics and 800MHz) and an X32 (same concept - still lame graphics chip) and actually traded a T42p wiht the 128MB FireGL graphics to get the X32. For my use, I'll give up the games to get small size, light weight and long battery life. The new X60 is even more promising, though I'll use what I have for some years to come.

You could get a Dock II and install a standard 1/2 height PCI graphics card in the expansion slot.
