14" T42 to 15" T42 HD Swap

#1 Post by stuffinder » Thu Jan 12, 2006 7:35 am

I just got a new 14 in. T42 (2378R4U) for our Pastor. I've been using a 15 in. T42 (2379DXU) for 9 mos.. While I love the 15 in. my eyes are really happpier with the 1024 x 768 of the smaller machine. I was also surprised at
the difference in portability. The owner of the new machine has better eyes than I and he said he'd be happy to swap. My question is this, can I just swap the HD's with all the program's intact? I have a very loaded 60K HD (his is 40K) and hate the thought of doing two complete reloads. I'm sure there's some way to do this easily and will be waiting for your responses. TIA

Regards,
Tom Heitzman

While I haven't done this with T42s, I have with 770s and it worked fine. I just swapped the drives. XP needed to load some new drivers but I already had them on the HD, which you should also.

I've swapped an T42 HDD up to a T43 without issue.

two T42s with same chipset should be no problem. Even T41 vs T42 (same chipset here to) should be no problem. T40 vs T42 will work fine to in almost all cases. However a T40-T42 vs T43 might cause some problems.

When I put the new 40K HD in my old machine I get a Boot Error! I got nervous and put it back and will wait until I receive more input.
Thanks for the quick response's but perhaps this isn't as simple as I thought.
It it possibly be firmware level compatibility? My 15 in. T42 has all the latest drivers installed.

T42 disk swap

#7 Post by leegaard » Sat Jan 14, 2006 2:53 pm

I have certainly done it with 2 T42. I have even done it with at T42 disk to at T23, and back in time from a T22 to at T42.

My swap from a T42 to a T42 ran almost without any problem. (It depends on the options installed in both models)

I would however install the latest bios and embedded controller firmware update.

Use the "software installer" for that issue

remove bios harddrive password protection if you have that activated.

I don't think it was seated properly or something. I've got it working OK now.
Thanks everyone!
