Thinkpad security, - Client security software 5.43 OR Suite?

#1 Post by kiig » Fri Jan 13, 2006 2:23 am

Hi All.

I'm thinking about stepping the security up on my t43p, - and I must admit I'm a bit confused after reading all the many posts on this issue.

I want harddrive encryption, - not just folders and 'private disk', - and I want to be able to do a backup. I use Ghost today, - but If I enable the security chip I probably neeed to use Rescue and Recovery because it works with CSS, right ?

But should I use Client Security Software 5.43 OR Client Security Suite 6...? I've seen several posts about going from 5.43 to 6.0 and the other way around, - so my initial thought about 6.0 being newer might not be entirely right, - 5.43 has been updated recently, - more recently that CS suite 6.

Could anyone hint me in the right direction ?

P.s. If I enable the FPR, - with CSS, encryption and all that, - will I still be able to type a keyphrase or password, - as well as using the FPR at boot ? (when placed in the dock at work it's not convenient to use the FPR)

I'm not able to answer your first few questiosn regarding CSS but if you enable the FPR you are still able to enter your password or passphrase by manually typing it in.

you're right, - only issue is that when using the FPR you only need to do it once (at boot), - and all subsequent login's are done automatically.... If I press Escape at boot, - and enter my passphrase, - I need to logon to windows using my normal windows password.... Is this 'normal' ?

I believe that is normal. That is what I need to do if I want to log in to my PC as an administrator as it is set to automatically log me in to my "limited" account when I use the FPR.

I failed to mention one thing though. I believe you can have it set up so that the FPR only gets you past the boot password and you still have to enter your windows password if that is how you would like it to be set up.

thanx, - but authentication once is quite fine.... I just wondered why I needed to authenticate once more, - when I entered the passphrase, - but you've confirmed that it's supposed to be like this. :-)
