Buzzing noises.

#1 Post by BoomAM » Fri Jan 13, 2006 9:53 pm

Hi.
On thursday morning, my Z60M that i ordered a month before turned up. Which i was pleased about. Now, for the most part, im quite happy with it, but i keep getting some annoying buzzing sounds depending on the situation.
For example. I get the sounds when im doing:
Scrolling up/down with the trackpad (but not with the middle button).
Transfering data via the ethernet conneciton.
Transfering data off a USB Disk Key.
When moving the mouse point over the buttons in Opera. (but not in Firefox or IE)

Now, some reading around would point me to belive that its the same buzzing sound thats aparentely on most Thinkpads, and is a common fault of which the causes are many and the solutions are none.
Which im fine with. As theres nothing i can do about it.
But what i want to know is that if i was to hypothetically send my Z60M back, would i get another laptop with the same problem (ie; its a common fault), or would i get a 'fixed' laptop?

Any ideas about the cause of the problem? A fix for the problem?
And if its worth me sending the laptop back for a replacement.

Thanks in advance all.

Bump.

Ive done some testing on my Z60M. And it appears that regardless of power sceme, if the AC adaptor is plugged in, the noise happens with the touchpad. But if its on batterys, regardless of if its on full performance or maximum battery life, it goes away.
Which, to me, would seem to imply that the AC adaptor is the cause of the problem. Its probably either insufficiently sheilded or its picking up interference off one of the many devices on the same ring main that the power adaptor is on.

It is an old problem. My T42 has the same problem. Indeed many thinpads have this problem.

The noise is from graphics card. When scrolling the window, you will hear the noise especially at night. The problem I guess is related to energy saving. When you use battery, the graphics card runs at lower speed(clock) even if you scrolls the window. This is why there is no noise with battery.

If you use linux, you need adjust the system clock. Otherwise you may constantly hear this type of noise.

Odd.
Ive been doing some work today on my Thinkpad, with me doing some image editing, web browsing and typing on it, and it appears to be making the same noises as if it was plugged in, but its not, its running off the batteries. :?:
Ive just switched the laptop power profile to maximum battery life & then switched powerplay on and then off, and the problem goes away.

I take it that thats the 'fix' that ive heard about then, changing power profiles?

Well, that is what works for me; toggling PowerPlay also helps too. I have heard this kind of buzzing on Thinkpads before, but it has never bothered me since it was rare under the conditions which I operated the System. :)

But she is an IBM.

Im pretty pleased with my Thinkpad now. :)
The only concern i have now is if ive damaged the PC Card slots by poking around in them. I dont think i have though. More of a paranoia thing really.
