Problem with Shortcut...How to fix.?

#1 Post by thkpdfan » Sat Jan 14, 2006 5:47 pm

I keep getting a window that pops up on my screen . I know it has something to do with the (Access IBM) button on my thinkpad. Because when I press it I can't access IBM sight.

I have found that if I let it cycle 72 times it will turn it self off..As oppose to closeing it every time it pops up.

The message in the window say's

Problem with Shortcut

:!: The drive or network connection that the shortcut 'IBM Access support.link' Refers to is unavailable. make sure that the disk is properly incerted or the net work resource is available, then try again.

Been it contact with IBM support, but haven't had any success with there advise.

I Im useing an external monitor so I can continue to work and access the web. But if I had to rely on the Thinkpad monitor nothing would get done. coz this window keeps poping up..

Any Ideas on hoe to get this fixed?

I would suggest uninstalling Access IBM from Add or Remove Programs in Windows (note: you can leave Access IBM Message Center), then download and install Access IBM again. You didn't list your model number, but for the T42, the page below has the file.

Access IBM and System Restore are 2 different things. System Restore is part of Windows. Off of the Start Menu open Help and Support, and on the right side of the page under: "Pick a task" you will see "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore." Click on that to find out about and use System Restore.

If you boot up using the Access IBM button you get into the Rescue and Recovery workspace. From there you can restore a backup if you made one previously with Rescue and Recovery. You can also restore your computer to the original Factory State, software wise. If you restore to the original Factory State, you will lose all existing data and programs on your hard drive. It is really a last resort method, or one that you may use if you decide to sell your ThinkPad.

For what you are trying to do, I believe System Restore is what you want - unless you have made a recent backup with Rescue and Recovery.

I'm confused ... you can't work because a Windows "can't find shortcut" is CONTINUALLY appearing?

This is a basic Windows issue if you initiate something in the OS, and it's linked to a shortcut file on your hard drive. Try hitting WINDOWS KEY + F (or Start -> Search) and look for "ibm*.lnk" (without the quotes). It may turn up in just the wrong spot. If it does, right-click, select Properties, and (depending on if it's a program shortcut, or Web shortcut) click Find Target....

Hope that helps....

Post a link to the picture instead if it is really large; via imageshack or photobucket if you like. :)

Un-installing and re-installing Access connections is the first thing you should do.

If That does not work, follow the following steps:

1. Click Start >> Run >> type "MSCONFIG" and hit enter.

2. Go to the "startup" tab and see the entries that you see relating to Access IBM. If not, go ahead and un-check them all for the time being to test if any entry there is causing the problem.

3. Once you click OK, it will ask you to restart, go ahead and do that. Once you restart, you will get a small message tellinmg you that you have modified the startup entries, just ckick OK start using you computer and see if the problem occurs.

4. If the problem does not happen, then we know some item in that is causing the issue. if you are not familier with what items in that list does, I would suggest taking screen shots using "Print Screen (PrtSc)" and then pasting it in Paint and uploading the picture, so that I can have a look at it.

Actually the best thing would be to call up Technical support and let them guide you through the process. tell them that something that automatically starts with windows is causing the problem. I am pretty sure they will be able to help you out from there. If they still don't get it, just hint them with "MSCONFIG" and they will carry on from there.

Now, if you still get the message, then the issue gets a little more complicated to diagnose. Before we get into that, I would sugest you try out the above recommendation.

Negative on that. Access Connections has nothing to do with the Access IBM key. You want the Access IBM User's Guide, the link for which I posted above.
