Hi,
Just got my z60t today and i'm really disappointed b/c it doesn't have a built in microphone. I just assumed it did since it had all of the other bells&whistles. So now what do I do? What I want the microphone for is to use OneNote and record/sync my lectures. So i guess I need a mic. Any suggestions?? I want something discrete, non-bulky, not a pain in the butt to deal with, has to work in large lecture halls as well! I've spent the past 3 hours looking for such a device but can't find what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance for the help,
Liz

Are you sure, you have a Z60t.
i have used the microphone on my Z60t on various occasions.
Goto Volume control -> Options -> properties -> recording.
Ensure that microphone is checked. Should work.
(Start -> Run -> soundrec32 )would test it

I decided to go for the Z60m instead of the Z60t for 3 reasons:
1. Discrete graphics
2. Built in microphone.
3. Built in media reader with more supported types.
These little things go a long way for conveninece. That said, small affordable mics abound. Hell, even my Creative webcam with built in audio is the size of a matchbox. Try the box stores, or tigerdirect or newegg....

I should have read the topic again instead of leaving my browser open for a day to reply to this. Is there an onboard mic?

I decided to go for Z60t instead of Z60m because
1. Integrated graphics (Gaming is better left to a SLI Gaming Rig)
2. Built in Microphone
3. Built in SD-Card reader: SD-Card is the way to go (chic and sleek)
4. Sexy Looks of the Z60t.. (I didnt appreciate the flab on the z60m )

confirmation for you. That is a mic near the Fn key. It's usaully on mute. Go into sound properties and unmute it and use the slider to cut the feedback by sliding it down so the whistle goes away and it works fine.

I'll admit i'm not very computer savvy, so would someone care to walk me thru?
This is why I LOVE thinkpads & thinkpad.com.... thinkpad users are so [censored] intelligent (except for me)...i'm just a chemist...

I don't know if you have tried this already, but here is what I did to get my microphone working. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Sound and Audio Devices. A new menu should open. Go to the Audio tab at the top. You should see a "Sound recording" section in the middle. The default device in my Z60T is "SoundMAX HD Audio." Click the Volume button and make sure the check box in the Microphone column is selected. Also make sure the volume level is adequately high. To try out the microphone, go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment -> Sound Recorder.
As for the fan, I was just admiring how quiet my TP is. You can control your fan sound level in the Power Manager. Hit Fn+F3. Go to manage settings and click edit. If you want the fan to be softer select Balance all parameters in the fan section. Of course, if you want your TP to run at full power, there is only so much you can lower the fan volume.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your Z60T. It's an awesome piece of work.

Add this to your Crappy Book.

I saw the Z60t in Office Depot the other day, and I was impressed. I liked it more in person than just looking at it on the websites.

Sorry, but I'm not writing the Z60t greatness book. Someone else is doing that.

Called tech support bc my thinkpad went bonkers on me. Turns out I've had a "defective operating system" the whole time. I was convinced I was just too ignorant to get things to work properly! Well the good news is that they're sending me a brand new one with a faster processor and 1G ram. And on top of that, since the price droped they are doing a price adjustment. Im so relieved....IBM stepped up to the plate!
I don't think z60t's are bad, I'm convinced that I just got a bad apple. Don't let a bad apple spoil the bunch. Z60t's still rock...don't be hating on the Z60ts!!!!
And if i get another defecitve one, i's still buy it again.
My thinkpad fits me like a glove...we are one.

My "hating on the Z60t" is just that - I don't claim they are bad, it's just that they have a bit too many "bad apples" for the average Thinkpad.
