Recommended Utility: MS Synctoy

OK, this is the best backup and syncing utility I've used in a while, and it's free! Simple to understand and works like a charm every time. I'm surprised it's not more well known.

After setting up synchronisation, every night I just pop in my external HDD, run SyncToy, and relax knowing all my data is safe.

Also try Synchronize It! from www.grigsoft.com. I've used it for a few years, now (still waiting for updates - currently at version 2.8 or something). What I like about it is the ability to create 'projects' that involve multiple folder pairs. It can be totally automated as well. Interface not always the easiest, but you get used to it.

Forget what it cost - maybe US$20 or so.
