Change resolution from 1680X1050 to 1280X800 with no blur?
Change resolution from 1680X1050 to 1280X800 with no blur?
Hi all,
I plan to buy a Z60m with the 15.4” WSXGA (1680 X 1050) screen. In case the resolution will be to high for my eyes, is it possible to set it to WXGA (1280 X 800) without getting the typical blurry letters? Since the ratio is the same (1.6), I would think it could work. Could anyone test this for me?
Thanks,
Br,
Anders

You'll get some blur, no matter what you do. Question is how much. Indeed some monitors are known to cope with different resolutions better than others. Like you, I'd wait for someone to test it on the exact model.
It's better to adjust the DPI settings in Windows to scale text up, instead of setting to lower resolution.

Hi Anders
I have just got the Z60M WSXGA & at the moment am wishing I never bought it!!!
The resolution of 1680 x 1050 is making my eyes hurt. When you go to Settings to change the resolution you have only got 1280 x 1024, 1024 x 768 & 800 x 600. Obviously these aren't widescreen resolutions.
I can't see that you can change to 1280 x 800. I have emailed Lenovo and am waiting for an answer.
I will post when I get an answer. However I am not very hopeful.
I just assumed that 1680 x 1050 was the maximum resolution and that you would be able to set other widescreen resolutions.

I have just found this article. It's about Dell laptops but applies equally as well here I think.

Thanks for your reply Bigrob. That is what I feared.... Seems very "stupid" that you are not allowed to change the resolution down to another 1.6 ratio format (like 1280X800).
Maybe another driver could help you? In the FAQ for this forum there are
some links to other drivers than Lenovos own.
Hope you get a positive answer back from Lenovo. I would be very glad to hear what they come up with.

I didn't think it was really a driver issue - if you have 1680 physical pixels (transistors) and information is provided for only 1280 pixels then the extra pixels must be guessed at values between adjacent pixels - this is what results in the bluriness.
The only way to avoid bluriness completely is to only use 1280x800 physical pixels (turning HV expansion off in the BIOS) which results in a black border around the screen for the unused pixels and ruins the point of having a 15" display.
I have tested on a Z60m and the blurriness does not seem bad at 1280x800 but if it is of concern to you i would check out other machines first to buy the right resolution to suit. I like WSXGA+ resolution on the 15" widescreen display but then I also like SXGA+ on 4:3 displays; if you prefer XGA resolution to SXGA+ resolution on a normal 14" to 15" display then you might be best opting for the lower resolution on your Z machine.

Scaling viewable size is supposed to be improved with Vista. This it becoming a large issue with many of the new laptops with very high resolution screens. Just imagine if you had a dell with a 15.4" screen with a resolution of 1920x1200!bigrob wrote:I was wrong. If you update the video drivers you can get 1280 x 800 but is too blurry tu use.
I have gone back to 1680 x 1010 with font size set to 120dpi.
Maybe Microsoft will sort this out in Vista.
What you have to realize is that unlike CRTs, LCD displays are fixed-pixel displays, meaning they're created for only one resolution and have a fixed amount of pixels with which to display an image. This is usually referred to as the native resolution. If you use an LCD and you don't have your computer's resolution set to the monitor's native resolution, the image doesn't fit nicely into the pixels on the LCD screen, resulting in blurriness.
