Z60M Screen Won't Come Back On

#1 Post by gbdesai » Mon Jan 16, 2006 11:35 am

Any ideas, I got a new Z60M and very often when I close the lid (I have turned off the close lid option to do nothing in the power options), and then open it, I get nothing. My indicator lights still show power (plugged in to AC) a fully charged batter, the power light (circle with Z) is on, and so is Bluetooth and Network. I thought I was in hibernate or standby, but no key combination or even a quick press of the power button can't bring things back to life. This happened even on the purely stock system before I installled any software... Any ideas?

i had the same problem.. except that when chose shutoff ,,, i think i closed the lid when the screen was showing "WINDOWS IS NOW SHUTTING"
and i closed the lid.. completely unaware that the laptop was still running..

later the batter alarm went off.. and when i opened the lid .. the the same page was still on... and no button or "cntr-alt-del" would work...
i had to let the battery run out before i could get started again..

i figured maybe ,.. i should just wait for the screen to go blank before i close the lid from now on or something..

i have not ttried setting the option of closing the lid to do nothing... when this happed it was set to standby..

jess.

I just noticed that I now sometimes get the unrecoverable black screen when I pull out the power cord. It dies on power profile change.

I had this problem on a Toshiba one time. It turns out the charging system was messed up, and would not properly transfer power between different setups.

Fn+F7 was my first thought too, the keyboard is locked. I figured some more out though. It is related to my Intel Pro/Wireless 2915ABG. When I boot under battery with the network hardware swtich off, it boots fine, try the same thing with the switch on and it fails. I also figured out it is not related to Bluetooth (by disabling WLAN then Bluetooth and vice versa). When I uninstall the wireless driver the system boots fine. I even tried an upgrade to the new Intel drivers with no luck. Now I have turned all wireless cards settings to manual mode and am fixing power output, etc. to see if that helps. I also ordered the Atheros based IBM card to replace this crap made by Intel.

I have a Gigabyte Atheros card in my Dell that I tried, but quickly found out the notebook only accepts IBM cards (I don't feel like hacking a fix for the card, so I just ordered the IBM part for $58).

In case anyone cares, replacing the Intel with the Atheros based IBM abg adapter fixed the problem. I actually found a note related to the same problem happening with Z60 machines that have the integrated Intel graphics, but it happened on my Z60m too. Anyway Atheros solves the problem and extends network connectivity dramatically.
