#1 Post by topgunmatt » Tue Jan 17, 2006 5:44 pm

Hi
My laptop recieved a slight knock in my carry case and now fails to boot.
The laptop emits 5 beeps which according to the ibm site means it something to do with the security chip on the motherboard.
Can anyone help please??????
Thanks

The security chip "snaps" into the planar/motherboard...I was sure it was in there pretty good and coming loose was not an option!

I would imagine it has come off OR it broke off! (more then likey the first option).....but I still can't see the first option happening!

Yours under warranty?

? : If anyone is reading this, the T40's have the security chip SOLDERED on the board, SOME T41's have it too...BUT for the ones that you can remove' I heard/read that a ThinkPad that will not include that option can have the option "installed" by pluggin in ANY security chip; any truth to this? (the chips are removable BUT NOT interchangeable, IBM did this to save on $$$...one board...plug something in and it has the option...do not plug the thing in and NO OPTION..without having to carry two separate FRU's)

Interesting problem...It could be that the connection to the Security Chip has been knocked awry somehow; you should take it in and have a tech look at it, preferably under warranty. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Hi
Thanks for your reply, what is the security chip for???
Is it a removable chip on the motherboard?

I would certainly see if your warranty applies. I have fallen on mine, cracked the case, dropped in on the floor while running and open, and certainly "knocked it slightly" many times. It needed a lower case and screen latches replaced, but otherwise runs perfectly. ... JD Hurst
