Pre installed IBM software
What are you guys removing from these things to get them to run better?? I want to remove everything including the virus scan and firewall stuff. Id like to ax r and r also. The only things i like are the finger print reader, think light, the Think Vantage Menu and Network Profiles. Everything else can go. Are you guys just doing this through add/remove programs?
TIA

I don't think you're going to speed it up that much. The only thing you can't really remove with add/remove programs is rescue and recovery because you'll still have the hidden partition taking up about 5 GB on your drive. To get rid of that, you have to make it visible in the bios. Then use Partition Magic or whatever to eliminate it.

@candy - when you have removed all you said you would, connect your machine up directly to the internet. Within 20 minutes, it will probably be toast. Of course, without the HPA, rebuild will also be out of the question.
I don't bother to remove anything (now that Update Connector is gone) and my machine runs exceedingly well - certainly not slow.

Obviously, you'll have to replace Norton with another antivirus, unless the computer won't be used on the net. AVG is free and uses less system resources. And of course, you should make recovery discs before doing anything. Personally, I think it's a waste to have the hidden partition taking up valuable drive space, especially since even if you do want a brand new install, you probably won't want factory defaults. Set up the computer the way you like, then use Norton Ghost or another drive imager to save a configuration you'd actually want to go back to if the need arose.

i dont normally run virus software. My e-mail is virus scanned server side, and i dont really download things of questionalble nature. Call me a lunatic if you like. How many times do you guys find anything when you do a virus scan? If you are finding alot you might want to think about where and what you are doing with your system that is of questionable nature. My last gateway was running a year stong on an install of xp, virus and spyware free. I am not advocating that you remove your virus protection. Wasnt really asking for the affects of removing the software that IBM/Lenovo chose to load MY system up with. I just wanted to know what you guys had removed from the IBM suite. Thanks anyway.

I use ESET NOD32 and it finds things regularly over different channels, server-side email checking is good, but it doesn't catch everything in my case. Also, even with popup blocking I occasionally get a script violation, etc. I hated AV software until NOD32, it takes almost no resources, its small, autoupdating, and catches everything.
