If you press the F, J and any letter between F and J (G, B, N, Y, T) and don't mute your volume, I get a beep. How can I turn this off? The beep is dependent on the sound volume..

I also get this beep when I press S, O, M and U all four at the same time. Is this normal?

You should get a beep if you press two or more keyboard keys at the same time; one key alone shouldn't be making a beeping noise.

In other news; as I was typing the respone to this thread outside on campus...it started to *rain*. The Thinkpad suspended quickly enough and was easy to carry indoors quickly plus my bag. Upon resume, it picked up the Wireless fine and got a free little bath+toweling in the process. I have also been on for an hour now and the fan has yet to turn on; I suspect that the cooler weather may also play a part.

Hmm. Sometimes I type faster than usual but everything still comes out nicely...is there a way to disable this? I've only noticed it with a few key combinations. If I press the F, J and B at the same time, it beeps... but if I press FJX, they all come out.

Hmmm...I don't know of any system setting that would fully disable it; I had a lock through the Control Panel just now as well as a quick search. The only thing I can think of is the accessibility features would allow you to change it slightly; although I am not sure that the keyboard buffer to the OS has a large enough delay to be triggered, continuously and not just a single event that is, during prolonged periods of typing.

I will look into this a bit more when I get a chance as it seems to be a problem reported by a few users already.

EDIT: I am not sure if this is going to help that much; but you can try using the filter keys option under "Accessibility Features" in the Control Panel and see. At the very best, though...That is a filter, and you are looking for the system to just not beep when those keys are pressed with a time duration shorter than a given interval and not to filter out extra strokes. Though, I suspect, it may only help in getting rid of the beep.

3. Under the "Non-Plug and Play Drivers" category, find "Beep." Right-click and choose "disable."
4. Restart your computer.

I've been told this works, but haven't tried it out myself, so YMMV.

it works! You can just click Properties and STOP the service immediately.

Anyone know 'why' this beep occurs? As various posters note, it's not caused by any random three-key presses, only certain ones - so this tends to rule out the idea that it's a warning beep for simply 'too many keys pressed'!

The solution above seems like it will disable any and all beeps (of a certain kind), not just the beep for the funky key combinations ... (not that that is all bad!). I'm curious to know what the root cause is!

FYI, I find it quickest to reach the 'device manager' by going to start/run, then typing 'devmgmt.msc'.
Even quicker, for you thinkpadders who have the 'windows' key, you can type 'windows+R' (windows key and R key together), then devmgmt.msc

Update ... on my T60, the beep occurs when
1) any three of the keys RTYU are pressed, OR,
2) RT and any third key in the same row exept '\'.
3) any three of the keys FGHJ are pressed, OR,
4) FG and any third key in the same row except caps lock and enter
5) any three of thekeys VBNM are pressed, OR,
6) VB and any third key in the same row except left shift

PLUS - the key combo - ICE (get this because I've been typing 'services' a lot recently!)

Go figure! Since most of those keys (but not ICE!) surround the red pointing device, I wonder if that's related ...?

I am assuming that since this happens when multiple keys are depressed, it's purpose is to inform you of that. I haven't run across it in years as I have become a rather good typist. However I do recall my IBM 8088 XT machine doing this. Heck ANY machine should do it as long as the system speaker is enabled.

In my old A22e a friend of mine and I used to play Neogeo Roms via Emulator (NeorageX) and I hated those nasty beeps everytime whe use to press so many keys at the same type)
