X24 Hibernate--how much power?

#1 Post by TomStearns » Wed Jan 18, 2006 5:05 am

When the X24 is in Hibernate mode, how much power is consumed? How long will it run on a fully charged battery?

Is it safe to change batteries while in Hibernate mode?

A briefly tutorial:
Difference between suspend to ram and suspend to disc (->hibernate)

Suspend to ram means, some components (RAM etc.) are already got some battery power and therefore battery capacity limits the time to resume.

Suspend to disk means your current work state will written to the HDD and a flag will set in OS-loader to resume from hibernate. For this suspend function no further battery or ac-power is needed. You can resume i.e. in ten years and more if your PC will already work.

Goodboy:

TNX for input. I did some practical tests and as far as I could see over 5 or 6 hours s you predict there was very little battery drain in Hibernate.

The X24 comes back from Hibernate to operate ie reboots much faster, so why not always Hibernate?

Well, you do have to reboot at times (deep driver installs)and, if I recall correctly, Microsoft Tablet XP had a memory leakage bug with tabtip.exe (the digitizer software) that would crash a Tablet PC; it was recommended that you always do a reboot per day. Most business/research machines, though, stay on for months. The longest my T43 has been on it around 2 weeks, so you can probably hibernate for quite awhile and avoid most reboots. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

Hibernation is my "standard" way of powering off - I assigned the hibernation modus to the power off button.

Guys---

TNX to all. If I live long enough I may begin to understand this beast.

Now what about the second question, ie can I change batteries while Hibernating? Looks like I could---is that correct?

Yes, you can. The hibernation status is "physically" the same like the "normal" powered off status. The difference between both is only during powering on, where in the hibernation modus the previously stored content of the memory is loaded from the hard drive back to memory for a quick start.
