Another T23 Question

I want to upgrade my harddrive. Its a 30gb one right now what are you guys using and how is it working. I use this for mostly music management and wordprocessing as well as internet and Instant messaging. Also what will a ram upgrade do (I have 512mb).

I've got T23's with both 512mb of ram and 1gb. For the kind of uses you're describing, I don't notice any significant difference between 512mb or 1gb. Word processing, for example, is somewhat limited by how fast you can type.

I'm using all Hitachi 5k100 hard drives, primarily because they were the biggest bang for the buck. Thus far, they've been reliable.

Any 5,400 rpm drive will provide a significant performance improvement over a 4,200 rpm drive. A 7,200 rpm drive will be even faster, but significantly more expensive.

I recently upgraded my T30's 40gb 4200rpm drive with a new Hitachi 5K80 80gb 5400rpm I got on eBay for $61. Besides doubling my storage capacity I observed a significant speed improvement. Sandra benchmarked the old drive at 18mb/s and the new drive at 32mb/s. In the real world, my boot time decreased from 3:49 to 2:46. All my apps seem much more responsive. I'm very pleased with the results considering what I spent.
