Noob:Can't get Software Installer or any ActiveX 2 work?

#1 Post by Yahdie » Fri Jan 20, 2006 1:48 pm

First Thinkpad, I can't get Software Installer to run beyond the ActiveX Popup, nor can I run the Lenovo My system to check Warranty etc.
What am I doing wrong?

Are you connecting by dial-up, DSL, cable modem, or other method? Are you using a firewall, and have you set it up to allow internet connections? What do you have your Internet Options security settings set to?

Wow! Quick response, Thanks.
Are you connecting by dial-up, DSL, cable modem, or other method?
WiFi thru my Dlink Router via DSL.
Are you using a firewall, and have you set it up to allow internet connections?
XP Firewall is On.

In Internet Options
ActiveX
Download Signed =P
Unsigned=D
Int & Script ..not marked safe=D
Run Controls & Plugins=E
Script marked Safe=E

Should one of these be changed?

Your setup seems about the same as mine, except I use Kerio firewall instead of windows firewall.

Some other things to check. Under Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings... > the box "Use a proxy server for you LAN..." should be unchecked. Under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, I believe Automatic Updates should be Started and set to Automatic, and Background Intelligent Transfer Service should be set to Manual.

If you have Dial-Up available, try it to see if it works.

One other thing that caused me a problem some time back is that I didn't have my DSL modem and router set up correctly. I could connect to the internet OK, but Windows Update wouldn't work. I had to set the DSL modem not to be the DHCP server. I had to set up the router to use PPPOE.

This link shows how to set up the DSL modem: http://kb.earthlink.net/case.asp?article=3351
