Are T40-43 preferred over T31-32?

I'm tring to get a single machine to replace several, and was thinking a t-series would be the ticket. Problem is, I can't get a handle on the difference between the T31-32 machines and the newer T40-43 machines. I can go for the newer machines if they are lighter and faster, but I'm not sure they are. In fact, on another thread I was told they were NOT quicker than the T32.

I do not need the higher res screen (makes machine too heavy, doesn't it?) but I do need lots of ram and a fast HD (can add both). Need fastest processor available. There are lots of 40-series here and on eBay in the 1200-1500 area.

Basically, what makes the 40-series (or specific models of this series) preferable over the T31-32 series? Are they lighter and just as fast? Lighter and faster. Lighter but less fast (like the X40 series with the slow HD)?

Depending on the model you get just as light, or lighter, than a T2X Series and faster if you look at the CPU clock speed. There are no T32s or T31s to my knowledge; the T30 was the only Thinkpad in the T3X Series, inbetween the T2X Series and the T4X Series. An SXGA+ 1400x1050 T4X is 14.1" and pretty light; it again depends on what model you would like to compare to what.

Like was said, there is no T3x besides T30.

T30 used Pentium 4-M CPUs up to 2.4GHz. T4x machines use Pentium M CPUs up to 2.26GHz. Even a 1.6GHz Banias P-M on a T40 should be faster than a 2.4GHz P4-M on the fastest T30. Not to mention that if you take a 1.8GHz T30 and a 1.8GHz T42, the latter is going to be like, twice as fast. And will consume less energy and produce less heat too.

The T4x machines are not heavier than the T30, when configured similarly. Of course if you compare a 15" model to a 14" one, it's gonna be heavier and bulkier. But rest assured that even the 15" T4x laptop is rather light.

Only T4x now. IMO, T42 is the sweet spot in terms of performance, as T43 is known to be a bit hotter and noisier (on average).

Hi, again. Yes, I have glommed onto that info that there was only a T30. In fact, I have a T30 2.0GHz with 60G 7200 Hitachi. I have the 1400x1050 SXGA 14" screen and the machine seems quite heavy to me.

I trying to find out with model the new thinner design appeared--was that the T40? or later in the T series?

I have used a T43 with the 14" 1400 x 1050 screen and it is clearly lighter than my T30.

Thanks. Was the design of the model changed with the T40 or later? I'll narrow my search probably to the T40 series, since the eBay prices don't seem a lot different.

I have a little confusion since in the X series there was a change with the X40 series using a smaller (and much slower) 2.5" [?] HD which apparently can't be replaced easily as there aren't fast versions of the drive available yet.

I'll look particularly at the T42. Also I want to look at the TABOOK regarding these units.

No USB 2.0 on T30. USB 2.0 first appeared on T40's.

To me, that's enough reason to avoid the T30's, unless you don't use or plan to use a digital camera, memory key, iPod, etc.

That's bothersome indeed and I never could understand that, considering that most of the P4-M laptops that came around the time of the T30 featured USB 2.0 support (AFAIK).

ummmm ... fwiw ... you can buy a brand new T4x directly from Lenovo for the same kind of money ...

I'm in Canada ... seriously considering purchasing a T43 online from the Lenovo Canada site (free shipping) ... $1499.00 CAD ( $1259.00 USD with 84% CAD to USD currency exchange rate) ... have bought 7 T21/T22/T23's on eBay in the last 2 years for friends/family ... have 3 of them in use at home currently ... think it's time I treat myself to a new "puppy" ...
