What model R40 do you have? That will help folks know what CPU options you may have, etc. I'm not sure there is a site per se that you can be forwarded to that will have all the information laid out unfortunately (you can get your detailed specs from www.ibm.com - search for your model number for example).

Either way, the video upgrade is a no go - it's soldered on the motherboard and can't be upgraded....I've upgraded the hard disk in my R40 - was painless with the ultrabay 2000 second hard disk drive adapter ($40 or so) and Acronis TrueImage software....

Upgrading the CD drive to DVD is painless using a standard ultrabay drive. You can also use the ultrabay enhanced drive but you need the optional adaptor for the enhanced drive. I don't think that the ultrabay slim drives will work though. If your system was originally configured with a CD drive you may not have the WinDVD software installed. It is included in the rescue disks but you may have to reinstall windows to get it.

Hard drive should give you a great performance boost. I am getting ready to replace my 4200 rpm 40 gb on my R40 with a 7200 rpm 80gb Hitachi 7K100. From my research (reviews, here, etc) it seems the Hitachi 7k100 is the way to go. Best price I found was on New Egg. From what I have read I should only lose 10 minutes of battery life. I'm planning on ofsetting that by replacing my CDROM drive with a secondary battery.
