Sysprep runs every boot, how can I stop it?

#1 Post by Yahdie » Sat Jan 21, 2006 9:11 pm

Just got my first Thinkpad, and for some reason, Sysprep runs on every boot which has the effect (my guess) of removing shortcuts,.
When I click on the Desktop shortcut for Access IBM, I get a "missing shortcut error", and have to have the system reset it, each time I logon.
Anyone with any ideas how to fix it? Hopefully the solution won't involve hacking the registry

Just out of curiosity when you look in computer management is your main partition NTFS or FAT32? If it is fat32 convert to NTFS.

Coincidentally, I was just about to convert to NTFS
Will this fix the issue?

Thanks for the input.

I believe so because sysprep is one of the last functions prior to shutdown and conversion to NTFS, somehow this step may have been missed in your case, or was aborted purposely.

You don't say if the ThinkPad is new or used. If brand new, consider returning it. At the very least, insist that IBM supply you a new set of recovery CD's (on the basis the build is bad on your machine). On a correct, new build, the error you describe does not happen.

Interesting....I bought it (discounted) from a re-seller New Open Box.
Factory warranty expires July '06.
What remedy do you suggest??

Do a reinstall to factory and monitor the process, it is fairly simple, just follow the prompts and let it run. You should have the recovery partition still in tact and useable on your HD, also burn yourself some recovery CD's. If you do the reinstall and still have the issue go with JD Hurst's advice and get some recovery CD's. Looks like we have very similar machines and I do have a set if you need to use them.

On reboot, I have my normal logon screen.
After logon, I get a DEP warning. Also, still get Sysprep 2.0..........

I imagine that had "Factory" worked, I wouln't see any of this?

Right, you also should not have the option of a factory re-seal if the install had gone correctly. It is starting to sound like your partition has been compromised. If you go into bios what is the setting for the pre desktop area? Maybe someone disabled it and has caused some problems. If you like, PM me with your address and I will send you my copy of the recovery CD's so you can recreate your partition and hopefully get a good operating system.

Have you tried to make recovery CD's, this option is part of the R&R environment F11, Create rescue media, and create recovery CD's. You may try this, however, if you can't get a good install with the on board partition it is unlikely to work just by copying the partition to CD's.

Yeah, If your installation is correct , you should not have the option to reseal. Someone must have interrupted the restore process.
Try F11 at startup and see if you can restore to factory state.

I am going to try this now, with the Restore set on the way, with fingers crossed.
First I'm searching the forum for advice/ideas :!:
