I get random/temporary stuck pixels + warranty question

#1 Post by dyne » Sun Jan 22, 2006 2:33 am

I have a 1.5 year old t41. This problem arose quite a while ago, but only on occasion. It seems to happen almost daily now.

On random, I'll get stuck pixels at different parts of the screen, one at a time. They're always stuck on white, and seem to go away after a while by themselves. I can also fix them by changing the resolution, and then changing it back again. They also occur at different, random parts of the screen.

My headphone jack is also broken (the laptop 'thinks' headphones are plugged in all the time, so the external speakers never work). I'm planning on trying and getting an rma in light of these two problems.

warranty question:
I upgraded the internal ram (under the keyboard IIRC), the minipci wireless card (with another IBM card), and the hard drive. Will that void the warranty?

My ferrets also spilled water underneat my thinkpad, so it was sitting in a shallow puddle. I don't believe it's caused any problems, but the dock connector did get wet. Also, this happened about 3 weeks ago, the audio and stuck pixels problems were occuring before that happened. Would IBM/Lenovo be able to void the warranty because of that?

Memory and WiFi card are user replaceable!

The problem is with the WATER! Water will dry and leave trace elements(minerals in the water) that can be "seen"....and yes IBM can "VOID" your warranty (for the damaged part) based on this! Your screen WILL get replaced, your keyboard will not and if the water TOUCHED the planar/MOBO that is no longer covered either EVEN if everything is working.....you can say I know all this from PERSONAL experience. I had spilled water on the keyboard, the lappy was fine! Some months later I got the red tint on the LCD and some keys that were acting up, IBM replaced the LCD but denied the claim on the keyboard and according to their "tests" the MOBO needed replacing which would not be covered under warranty either.

I bought a keyboard on EBay and till the day I parted with it, never had any issues.

EDIT: Is late...I missread your post...I will leave as is, as the MOBO part aplies to you...disregard the keyboard part...

What I recommend you do! Take it to a local authorized IBM repair shop, explain what happened and let them tell you what they think BEFORE they submit the information to IBM/Lenovo! Then you can address the situation.

Or you can pop the "hood" and see if you see any water damage! The least I would do, is look for a new keyboard on EBay!

My $.02 and good luck!

If the stuck pixels are white and only one pixel is stuck at any given time, the problem may actually be a software bug with UltraNav. Next time you see a stuck white pixel, try positioning the cursor directly over the pixel. If a double headed arrow appears, the problem is with the UltraNav software and is not a hardware problem. To temporarily get rid of the "stuck" pixel, press the center mouse button for the trackpoint (the one with the blue stripe) while the cursor is positioned over the pixel.

Mine does this from time to time. Other users may have a more permanent solution, but I am unaware of one.

yes, the double arrow does appear. However, clicking the middle mouse button doesn't do anything. I tried when the double arrow was there, as well as just having the body of the cursor over it

That actually scared the sh*t out of me after 3 days of owning my current t43... This black dot appeared in the middle of my screen and i freaked. It took a while to figure out, but I was about ready to send it back.

Same here :) it freked me out as well. When you see it do ctrl+alt+del and you will see a program with a default windows icon running under applications tab, kill it and it will be gone. This is however a temporary solution, and it will/may appear again later on, mine does it once every couple days.
