GUIDE: New Owners, steps to get the most from your system!
cristopher: the only way I can get rid of it is to set the cpu speed at the lower possible (via nhc), so the fan is not operating.
As soon as the fan is on, I get this annoying '5 second pulsing noise', does I have a hope getting rid of this by getting a replacement fru for this part?
I should look at the fan control utility, if it allow me to set the minimum cpu temp before the fan get on it will help someway.
Anyway, thanks for your advices!

The one way I know that gets rid of the pulsing noise I have seen on some Thinkpads is to either toggle back and forth between power schemes in the power manager or to toggle back and forth between BIOS mode and Smart Mode with the FCU. That usually gets rid of it and any electrical buzzing noises that are unrelated to the fan.

You are right, that help
but only in the way that when the fan is off or when it's really on (when cpu get really hot > 55°), the fan seems to have 3 states:
- off
- 1st speed (wich has this annoying pulsing pitch ramp down every 5 secs)
- 2st speed (wich feel less annoying but slighty higher pitch)
that's the first speed that i feel has annoying, I would go look at the details of the fan control utility that I found at sourceforge via this forum.
Is it a design flaw of the t4x serie?, is it allready hearable on a factory new unit?
For the purpose, do you have some hints on my thread about my recent purchase? (http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=22811 namely 'Need advice on refurbished t40p issues')
Thanks for your help!

If in warranty, call and tell them keys popped off and you cant get them back on, they will send you a new board. 'Cant gaurentee which board you'll get, but they just sent me a new board, overnite, because the left arrow key broke off (thats what they know). The girl said the old kb is a disposible part and to not send back.davedave wrote:What is this about getting a new keyboard possibly for free? My T40's works good but they keys are worn and it is noisyer than my newer T40. I am still under warranty.

Holy moly, the thread got stickied!
I suppose I should post an update: I now only use Pbus-167's Notebook Hardware Control. I found that I had no need to run TPFanControl on my T42 as the fan is never on (less than 1% of the time).
NHC is generally more advanced than just RMClock, and I like it because it can disable the battery icon in the system tray, as well as a multitude of other features.
The fan in a T42 (at least mine, with M10 long fan) is never on. I would still recommend posting your undervolts in the long sticky thread as many have done before you.
Here are the essential TP Programs to have - the rest Windows can support.
Active Protection
Fingerprint (If required)
Power Manager (to display the time remaining on your taskbar... not the percentage, but the actual (hours:minutes))
Software Installer (to update..)
Sound Drivers
Thinkpad Configuration
Keyboard Customizer Utility
Note: if you want to optimize your startup programs, leave TpKmapMn.exe running, which controls the key binding.
Also, Tpshocks.exe is for your APS, so leave that on too. (Almost) everything else can be disabled on startup (if you're really picky).
ibmpmsvc.exe is your power manager, so leave that running too.
Intel Centrino boards need the following 3 programs running in order for the Fn+F5 to work (in some cases, like mine - your system MAY vary)
S24EvMon.exe
EvtEng.exe
RegSrvc.exe

ThinkPad T serial is performance AND mobility. If you put so many additional cooling and clock downgrading tools, you are losing your performance. I think, the fan controlling utility from IBM is excellent. You got to let them run if the IBM tool thinks it should run!! Otherwise
I guess, it's because you just used it for one month. ThinkPad T serial has a EXCELLENT reputation for it's lifetime and design, especially for those designed and made before Lenovo took it over.
For the long run, you donot have to put additional software. The first thing, you should do is to fully utilize the IBM utilities. They are really well designed and programmed, better than those nonspecific freeware.
Eventually your battery has to be replaced if you need longer battery duration. Let's give you a fact, all my 4-year-old T40s (three of them) still run pretty well, last over 1.5 hours with WiFi on. Actually I haven't put any protection on it at all (but I never use it as a game machine), I am buying it's reliability!
I think, T40 quality is better than T41, 42, 43.
