I have a T22 and I am not intending to up grade the processor. The highest speed is 900Mhz @ 100FSB. Your processor is 700Mhz hence a increase of 200Mz is not worth the troouble.
I suggest you wait for a good and cheap T40(1.5 or 1.6G) and upgrade to a 2.1G or 2.0G, then you will get a very fast system. I am just doing that. I am waiting for 6-12 months for T40/41/42 prices to drop about $300-500 from their current prices.

Re: T20 processor upgrade?
To upgrade your processor.....u need to change the fan as well. The maximum processor upgrade would be the 1000 Mhz ones. But I'm not sure you can get it or not....BossTone74 wrote:How high an what kind (model number??) should I get??

However, I would not recommend this upgrade........and not worth it as mentioned by ttan98. His recommendation is much better...

If were to put a little more "zest" into it...what model # of PIII 1000ghz should I get is the biggest question??? I am trying to upgrade the girlfriend comp, cuz it's just a little sluggish for me. And she's actually complaining about it a bit. So I thought it'll be fast enough for the next couple of years if I do a upgrade on it now...It's just a surfing and word processing comp....

You definately need some more ram. I would suggest adding a 256MB stick into your machine. A faster HD (also larger) would add to the serviceable life of the machine.

Take a deep breath!BossTone74 wrote:I don't think a 133 would work...it's gotta be 100? doesn't it?
Someone for the love of god! PLEASE HELP!
To be honest there is a wealth of knowledge on this very board about T2x CPU upgrading. There may be an apparent lack of help as most are thinking "use the Search button" !!
Anyway, it's not often I can say "been there, done that" on this illustrious forum but in this case I have. You require a Mobile Pentium III but it MUST be the 100MHz bus model. 1GHz is as high as you can go. Technically, the voltage requirement is slightly higher for anything above the 850MHz but I have had no problem with that.
I went for the SL5TF though I have a feeling the SL5TB or the SL54F would have been fine. The Micro-PGA2 or BGA2 package is required. It's POSSIBLE the 495 pin package SL58S and SL53S might fit but I wouldn't risk it.
Quick check of Ebay reveals 3 x SL5TF's but I see they are still fetching quite a decent price ~ $65. Ah, the wonders of the free market - I saw a Mobile Pentium M (Centrino) 1.7GHz go for the same price yesterday!
Now, heat. You are going to be generating substantially more for your T20 to cope with. The fan really should be upgraded. Again possible but for a price. Despite upgrading my fan/heatsink when my 1GHz is running full tilt the temperature gets really quite (impressively/worringly) hot - there is no way I would want 100% load for any sustained period of time.
So, should you do it? From experience I'd say yes if you 'just want to' or 'because you can' but to be honest the RAM/hard drive combo is a better bet as is often the way.

Jonathan, I completely agree. If you can get a dirt cheap 1GHz CPU for the T20 it would make sense to upgrade. The problem is the thermal compound of the T20 (which is crap and must be trashed).
You then have to get the T22 Fan unit. Heat is no problem with the T20 and the old heat sink, but your fan will run most of times.
I have done this many times. Currently I gave my old T20 to my father. It has a 1Ghz CPU, T22 Fan Unit with the heat transfer spring to the keyboard and it is dead silent most of times.
Again, WinXP needs 256MB Minimum just to run itself, anything below is a waste of time.
You will never get the T20-T22 up to speed, not even with a fast drive. suggestions otherwise are foolish. The problem is the limited I/O data rate of the Intel BX440 chip set. A 4200 rpm drive is the best and it is dead silent.
However, if you upgrade to the T23 motherboard, you have a VERY different beast. A 7200 rpm here is very nice. Data throughput us vastly higher. Of course, no DDR Ram, but still, it is very nice to work with.
Actually, to most of my friends, I recommend to dump the T20 on EbAY and make the cheap upgrade to the T23. You can even keep your hard drive and everything on it installed, just plug in the drive and let the hardware be recognized.

you sure your 1.0Ghz cpu shares the same voltage demands as your original 800Mhz cpu?
cuz if the 1.0Ghz needs more voltage, then it will not work in your motherboard.

can't say but if the the board gives 1.65v at the core ,speed step will surely clock cpu to say 750 . have updated bios so still no go my board is a t22 bios is latest for that board i ID it at lenovo i will cotact seller from ebay see what he can suggest . ianf..
i noticed jonathan w fitted this type hope he has some input also what board ver he has ..

Hi Ian (I presume!),
Yep the SL5TF is what I went for and it was a drop in replacement. My first thought/concern is that your CPU is faulty.
Only real way to see is pop it into another machine which I appreciate may be easier said than done. I put my SL5TF into a T21. You have a T22 which in my opinion rules out the compatability question - it definitely is. I'm afraid my vote is for duff CPU, sorry.
I can't check my board revision at the moment as I am in Sydney for a while with only my X31 for company!

anyone know if once you put in the 1.0ghz cpu into the T20 does the bios recognize it as a 1.0ghz cpu w/ speedstep?
i remember trying to use amd xp-m cpus on amd motherboards and they couldnt determine the cpu speed
