changing SP2 installation to SP1, is it possible?
changing SP2 installation to SP1, is it possible?
hi everyone,
I wanted to ask if it is possible to remake the SP2 installation for it to become SP1?
My T43 came with the SP2 installed, in C disk there is the directory named I386. I tried to convert all files in that directory to become a version of SP1 by using this guide: http://www.4saad.com/WhatsNew/Fresh_XP_ ... /index.htm
But then i tried installing windows from that CD that was created by following this guide, and it told me that some files were missing, like wdmaud.drv modem.sys and something like that. Why was it like that?
I want to have a SP1 windows in my T43, and don't want to use the pirated windows xp sp1 that i can get a hold of (or maybe it would be legal if i have bought windows xp sp2 with my T43?)
thanks for all the ideas.

As far as I know you can't do that from an image.
If you HAD SP1, and updated to SP2, I believe there is a way to revert using System Restore (might even be an uninstaller, I forget).

This is from the SP2 CD from microsoft (got a copy when it was free):
You can use Add or Remove Programs to remove SP2 and restore your computer to its previous state.
To remove Service Pack 2 by using Add or Remove Programs
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Add or Remove Programs, click Windows XP Service Pack 2, and then click Remove.
Follow the instructions that appear on your screen.
Important
If you choose to remove SP2, a dialog box displays a list of the applications that you installed after you installed SP2. If you continue with the removal, these applications might not work correctly.
My t42 is imaged with the factory CD's with SP2 and I did go to Add Remove Prog and at the very bottom there is a "Remove XP SP2" ain't gonna try to remove it because SP2 has not caused any problems on any machines I have come across yet. Are you having issues with it, maybe you could fix those? Just curious not being nosey.

Why? SP2 works well, offers general improvements, and better security. I have been using SP2 since it came out in 2004 with no issues.yozas wrote:hi everyone,

actually i have to disagree.
sp2 is worthless. it contained:
IE and outlook patch and upgrade, which most of us do not use because we use firefox and thuderbird ( i use mozilla 1.7.12 which is even more secure and lotus mail)
windows security center and firewall, which is a piece of junk. nothing compare to sygate free edition
directx, wireless improvement, bluetooth and windows media 9. once again. all junk. directx might be usefull and avaliable on its own. i use access connection for bt and wifi. windows media 9 itself is the biggest trash i ever seen. use media player classic (which allows to you play DVD and it's free) and if you need install the wm9 codec only.
so sp2 is essentially all junk that will slow you down. if you use sp1 and keep patching update, you are at no disadvantage that sp2 which will slow you down.
only difference can be tell if someone is clicking on a program (.exe) but i have all extension displayed and supposely sp2 fixed the modes which your hard drive and dvd works. if you are family with DMA downgrade to PIO mode, MS said they addressed that in sp2.

I disagree, while SP2 may be worthless to you as a serious computer user, for many of my customers who use computers only at work and have no interest in them it offers that little bit more basic security that can mean the difference between total shutdown and being able to keep working. I think you would be amazed at how many company networks have no virus protection, firewalls, anything, a lot of people deal with think virus's happen to 'other" people. The pop up blocker, firewall and other security features that came with SP2 have probably saved a lot of peoples PC's. And I know you might think, well these people don't deserve to use computers if they can't secure them, that is just not reality. Thank goodness for AVG/MS Beta Spyware because I've loaded it on so many computers it's funny, and people are actually appreciative to get something for free, it seems to spark more of an interest in thier overall view of keeping their machine secure.sp2 is worthless. it contained:
actually for the past year i got some real bad computers from clients and this is what i do:
zero drive
install os under spc mode
install sp1
patch up
install sygate
install media classic
install firefox
install speedfan
and other stuff they want
and most go with symantec corp editition
i explain why i chose every step and introduce them to new softwares and how to use then. i corprator basic education into the OS package and as a result they understand why they have virus and how to protect themselves. and when they get new upgrades they come back and want me to do the same.
i did try side by side sp1 vs sp2 and i find sp1 to be faster, especially when multitasking
and for everyone who have boardband and doesn't have a router, i tell them to get one. a wired router if no wifi is required.
