600E Boot order problem. Any help greatly appreciated. Help!

Hello!

Firstly I would like to thank all people who run this website. This is great, and it is outstanding that there are people who put a lot of effort in helping others with theirs! Thanks again.

Now to my problem:

I have a Thinkpad 600 E which hard disk I have just formatted. After formatting the hard disk, I had planned to insert Win 98 CD and change the boot order. Well, it didnt turn out so easy.

When I try to enter bios with F1, it doesnt come up at all, but continues and says non system disk... Obviously that is due to no data on C:\ which it has as default now.

How can I get to Bios when F1 doesnt help.? Also I have no Floppy station left, so can I get the CD running without first inserting a CD driver from floppy?


The cmputer is in great condition and I really dont want to throw it "away".

Please help how to find the Bios and what changes there are needed in order to get the CD running, and also what do I need to do to get the Win 98 installation going...

Make sure to press and hold F1 right before turning the computer on and keep held until you see the BIOS screen. When you wait for the screen to turn on to hit F1, you'll always end up pressing it too late.

you need to hold down the F1 key when you switch on and keep holding until it go's into bios

win 98 needs a boot floppy to install it will not boot from cd unless you have made a boot cd copy hope this helps

I'm sure you don't realize you are probably doing this incorrectly.

Please read and follow carefully

START WITH the machine COMPLETELY OFF


HOLD DOWN and CONTINUE to hold down the "F1" key

WHILE STILL HOLDING the "F1" key

Turn on the machine------and------CONTINUE TO HOLD the "F1" key


DO NOT LET UP on the "F1" key.


(This may take several seconds)

The machine should display a small screen usually blue/green display that says "Easy-Setup"

Use the mouse to click "startup"

In next display, click "power on"

In next display, click "reset", then click 1, 2, and 3, the order you want, then "ok" at bottom left

Click "exit"

Click "restart"

Click "OK"

There should be a tiny reset button on the left side, with a square symbol below it, get a small pin or needle and push the button to reset everything.
That may help but no promises.

It is also possible that the F1 key is not working.

For windows 98 you must have a boot floppy.

That is NOT ALWAYS true, but it raises a point:

What kind of '98 CD are you trying to boot with?

So far as I know,

NONE of the "upgrade '98 cd's will boot"

PROBABLY NONE of the 'store bought' RETAIL cd's will boot

ALL of the so called "OEM" '98 cd's boot---the ones that say on the front of the cd "to be supplied only with a new PC."

440roadrunner is correct. I can get by easily with just my Win98SE CD. I haven't had to use a floppy for an OS installation since Win95, unless I needed a specific tool or driver first
