Problems with Suspend, IBM Rep Says I Need to Run Preload

#1 Post by revolutionary_one » Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:32 pm

Lengthy Post...Bottom Line=Sleep/Standby wont work with retail version of WinXP Pro (w/ Sp1, and later installed Sp2)

I have the t42 mentioned in the sig. For about 6 months i've deleted the preload state and been running linux. Which has worked beautifully for all of those 6 months. Everything including ACPI worked flawlessly.

However, i brought a nice little windows XP pro (with sp1, later installed sp2 manually) cd from india and thought i'd give windows a try. But, I couldnt get Sleep / Standby to work, the option wasnt even MENTIONED in the Power Options menu, nor could i get it to work with ALL the IBM drivers installed. Stand by works when i close the lid when in BIOS menu.

Told the rep that i couldnt get the screen to shut off with fn+f3 and couldnt get Sleep / Standby to work with Fn+f4. Guy with southern accent put me on hold for about half an hour before he was able to say, "we dont support the retail version and you need to contact microsoft." I asked what makes the preload image so special, and he said that its tweaked with IBM drivers that are publicly available, which i downloaded and installed. I even tried using the drivers that i had backed up in the "ibmtools" folder. Those didnt work.

Windows n00b, asking for some help guys. Linux ACPI is so much easier i'm sad to say. I really need this or having a thinkpad laptop really isnt worth it :(

PowerPlay, which is part of the ATI display adapter settings causes problems on some setups. I have it enabled with no problem, but I have read where others could not go into Standby with PowerPlay enabled. To check, right-click on an open area of the desktop, choose Properties > Settings > Advanced > PowerPlay tab.

If you don't have all the IBM power management drivers installed, you can get them from the following link. Check the readme files for every driver you install, as some drivers are dependant upon others to be there.

I didnt install the ATI display drivers. However, even WITH installing them later on and taking into account your PowePlay advice, it still is not working.

Furthermore, i used the software installation tool that IBM provides to update and install software. Thus, dependency checking should be automatic with that service / software. And, as always, i installed EVERYTHING pertaining to PowerManagement and Keyboard Customizer.

Anyone else up for some troubleshooting?

[btw, asked the lead tech on the floor of that call center to give me a call back, still no response...hopefully the repair service is a bit better]

Ok so i did go ahead and install the preload from the rescue and recovery cd set. And everything works, as well as windows can anyway.

However, its kinda odd that even with the freeware drivers they provide to interact with the XP kernel the same way, PowerMangement functions dont work? Really would like to be able to use my retail version instead of wiping the drive to use their Preload. Please, any help is appreciated.

I have read this post over and over and for some reason I just can't figure out what the deal is with using a retail version of XP over the preload. It's there, it has the drivers that work with the hardware. :?

I bought a retail XP pro cd for my desktop and have been using it for a little while and can't see any difference in it and the preloads on my two IBMs. Some OEM versions lack certain functionality but I have not come across that with the IBM version.

I've got retail XP Pro on a few Thinkpads that came preloaded with other OS and they work fine.

Is it possible that this is another one of those situations where things didn't work because some IBM drivers/utilities have to be installed in a particular order? (Which may not be a concern when doing a system recovery)

Well, that's the problem, EVERYTHING else seems to be relatively stable and functional for me EXCEPT FOR alll the ACPI stuff (Sleep / Standby, Hibernate, Screen Off).

I'm just dumb-founded....maybe I should try getting a version of XP Pro packaged with SP2. For now things are working all right with the preload. Although i'm back to dual booting Linux. We'll see what i can scrounge up as far as XP w/ SP2 goes. I'll report back.

In the meantime, anyone with some prospective solutions / things to try. Feel free to jump right in.

Perhaps it's a problem created if you do not install the Intel Chipset drivers. It is generally recommended that this is the first thing to install after a clean Windows installation.

Thanks, but i used the "Software installation" software that IBM packages provides that helps you install all the IBM software that IBM provides to the customer.

The first thing it installed is the chipset drivers.

Might throw something out there, Windows XP SP1 is from about 2002, thus, it might be too old to accomodate for the hardware that IBM put out for the T42 in about 2003-2004.

keep Em Coming Yall, i know some more people in this forum have this problem, lets nip it in the butt.
