t41p or t42p?

#1 Post by sage529 » Fri Jul 16, 2004 9:13 am

give that the latter is a good $1000 more (at least on ebay), would it be worth getting, since the t41p comes with comparable parts (vid card, ram, hd, slightly slower processor)?

Anyone know a good place to get either one other than ebay?

IMHO, unless you want the flexview 15" 1600x1200 UXGA display, I don't think there is really much reason to go for the T42p over the T41p. Bill Morrow is a good source for purchasing Thinkpads at a discount (this is his forum after all).

yeah, unless you want the 15", it's not worth getting the t42p. As for the processor speed, 1.7 GHz is plenty for any game/application. The bottleneck of pc performance is no longer the cpu. Honestly, I switched from a 900 MHz AMD processor to the 1.6 GHz P-M and I only notice a slight improvement in speed when i load programs.

I currently have a T41p and loving it...

I had the same question and asked many questions but if the price gap is not that much...get the T42p...(around $2800) but if you can get the T41p for a good deal...Go for the T41p...

The overall built is about the same...

Hi All,

At last, I ordered my T41p today after solving a lot of confusions in my mind to opt for T42p.

* The flexview 15 inch screen flexview is really cool stuff, I agree. But I ask anybody a question. You may like to have a nice view at a different dimension, but IMHO I look at the screen mostly straight in front of me. Leaving that flexview, 15 inch is really big enough to get a satisfaction out of a screen. I still prefer a bigger desktop screen like mine(19 inch) for a really BIG necessity.

* DVD burner is in my desktop, where I really write DVDs once in a while. For movies, I prefer 2 drives one to read and the other to write, to write on the fly. I also use DVD+R and write it. But IBM burners doesn't have support for +R I guess.

* Dothan vs Banias: not a ground breaking performance for the price that you pay for.

* I also read one more diff that the modem is better in T42p. BTW, how many of you use dialup internet? T41p still works..

So, at last a gr8 lappy for a cheap deal.

regards
Parthiban.

thanks for the feedback... i think i'm going to opt for the 41... are there any foreseeable price drops in the next two months? want to get mine before i go to school, but wonder if i should get it in late august or just get it now... will there be a price difference?

found this on ebay... sounds like a pretty good deal... should i jump on it?

It seems like a refurbished...

Warranty is 1 year...(New comes with 3 years) and wireless is a/b/g (T41p GGU has a Centrino 802.11b) - but the intel sticker looks like a a/b/g...looks weird...

Get it online($2470~3000) or from Bill ($2550)...one store offering refurbished for $1870...

also ibm.com has refurbished around $2100...

DVD Burner??

#11 Post by boardmonger » Fri Jul 16, 2004 3:33 pm

Ok is it just ME or does it seem odd that they the seller says DVD Burner on his ad when it is just a DVD/CD-RW? If this guy (or girl) sells alot of thinkpads whouldn't they know what the system has or maybe it is just a typo......To give them credit it does say DVD/CD-RW later in the ad, but with the 1 year warranty and the other odd issues I wouldn't buy it.
